K & N filter fittment.

Hi all, just received a shiny new K&N filter and the instructions describe applying the "supplied special grease" to the ends of the filter. There is no supplied grease.
My question is, is the grease essential, and if it is can I substitute with something else, petroleum jelly for instance ?

They are a tight fit and the rubber they are made with is grippy, so you will want to use something on it but I don't think it matters what. I used a little air filter oil as I had it handy, but anything to make it more slippery will surely do. I wouldn't use petroleum jelly though, I'm not sure it would be slippery enough and a little chunk breaking free and getting into a carb could be bad!

Petroleum jelly is fine. I used it on the slides of my mk2 Amals on the triumph for years to help stop the slides from sticking.

Thanks guys .. Now that I know it's just to aid fittment, I notice the plastic bag that it comes in has a lot of residual filter oil in it, I might just gather some of that up and apply it to the rubber.

Petroleum jelly is great, but rubber grease is even better, mineral oil will make the rubber breakdown and shorten the life of the filter.
