Ok, so thought I would give this a go seeing as I was changing the chain and sprockets and have had the classic oily starter symptom for a while. All was going well until it came to removing the old one - I couldn't just prise it off, it was stuck and needed to be scraped off with a screwdriver.
Got me wondering that maybe I had pulled off the wrong seal, or that the one on there was incorrect, as there didn't seem to be any discernible tabs on the rear face of it. The ring it sat in had 6 small holes if I remember correctly, and the old seal was completely blocking them.
Anyway, I placed the new seal and it seems to just sit there, not really tight, but not too loose either. Is the cover plate meant to hold it in place? I put everything back together and took it for a run, and there doesn't seem to be any leakage, but I am still a bit concerned I may have done something incorrectly as by all accounts on here people have just been able to pop off the old seal without any problems. Is there something I am not getting about this supposedly simple procedure?
