removing head race bearings?

Hi.

What tools do you lot use when chaing your head race bearings? I need to remove the races from the headstock. The top one has come out using a selection of drifts but i can't get the bottom one off (yet). There's 2 recesses where i can slide a drift onto the race but cant get a good enough purchace to make it move. Looks like i need a drift with a thin shoulder, but where to get one of those? What are my options? I need to hit it, but with what?

You want a long cold chisel, or long pin punches. Are you going to use the race again?
If not you can be as forceful as is necessary to remove it, you`ll damage it very likely but that`s the nature of the beast with head races.

No magic tool, just a long drift or punch like mince sez.

The bottom ones take all the weight so can be a bugger to get out.

I use a bit of steel rod, about 4mm dia.

Get a big hammer and give it some welly!!!

When you're fitting the new ones, pop the in the freezer overnight to shrink them a few 0.1 of a mm but dont cold-burn your hands!!

Good to know there's not a special tool. I've got a few long punches but the all taper at the tip. The extra width at the top of the puch resting at the top of the head stock means I can't see enough of the race to give it some welly with the hammer. But yeah, a thin straight punch, i'll try and get one of those. If not i'll have to take a file to my old cold chisel to put some shape back into it. Thanks for the swift replys.

You can run a bead of weld around the inside of the race. When the weld cools it contracts and makes the race slightly smaller- they do occasionally drop out of their own accord after doing this. Boiling water over the headstock then plumber's freeze spray on the race also works wonders

I have an empty oxy port a pack so I can't go that route. If anyone in east london is reading this and can help me out with a bottle swap that'd be great. But, yeah, nice tips. I'll slowly build my self an arsnel of tools for heasdrace bearings. It's not my first time doing this but the TRX is the tricketst bike to do this job i've come accross.
