EXHAUST can packing

Some of the folk here probably dont put the kilometers up to need a repack of the end cans.but,..obviously when the sound inpulse packing is worn out, and loosened, so it is gradually blown out the exit and the resulting sound is like making a phone call whilst in the toilet..
i am on the freeway at around 120 kph every working day./80 kays round trip..[ this is riding in OZ ..blue skys and all].., so it tends to break up and become noisey...
Anyhoo..what is the lean out there..im thinking the exhaust /heat special matting fibre glass that the muffler shops use.
Visited one near my work and was quoted 50 dollars a side...
And thats not fitted either..maybe not much work on.

i did my own. bought the wadding off ebay. you will need some wire to hold it in place when you re assemble units.

Well, there was more in the packing than i thought..the hollow sounding exhaust note was just a large hole in the packing that was probably due to a gas pressure, vibration and seam weakness...
A simple operation to drill out six alloy pop rivets, remove the alloy end cap, then slide the inner baffle assembly out.
The whole inner baffle is made from titanium and has the initial sound baffle, and then the reverse flow engine pulse restricting end can...same effect as the trx origonal system design, but smaller and lighter.
The crappy sound was made by the exhaust note exiting throught the packing hole and useing the 9mm gap between the baffle and the outer alloy caseing ..
After repacking and refitting, ive not noticed any decrease in sound level, i just has the note back..., much better.
It took me four revisits to the hand cleaner to see skin again from the black soot...could have diluted it and put into my printer cartridge..

While apart, ive sand blasted the carbon out and cleaned the system well proir to reassembly.
I also removed the whole exhaust and sand blasted down the tubeing to remove any deposits..the gas flow now will be improved somewhat..

Most race / straight through absoption type race cans have full length tubes over here. Must be pretty loud?

No, mince, ive not modded at all, this system has 1999 date stamps and a Yoshimura Japan label..
Shes the real mackoy all titanium with an alloy outer end can and cnc machined exit and inlet end caps..origionally all tha alloy was anodised silver.
Thinking it might have been a response to the OVER systems.
Kevin took to the headers with a vernier gauge to find a smaller diameter than his stainless OVER example...apparently for mid range..
The whole tubeing weighs less than what some might show with a WET TOWEL..[ if you catch my drift]

I am always looking to do something extra, so ive always wanted to do something with the mint OEM trx cans that i picked up recently for a song..so ive degloved them both and fitted tha outer skins to my outer end cans to have the GOLD finish..
Sad, but i really dont know what else to do with them...

Interesting your thoughts there mince..true, id reackon to have more fuel and air into the motor, will need to have same out...hence a full length absorbtion tube.
BUT the engine pulse that isnt return flow baffled would sound more like a harley ?
If anyone has looked[cut into] an origional TRX muffler will know that to stop the detonation pulse, yamaha designed the end can with two exhaust tubes emptying into an end can and then two more exiting to the atmosphere making the lovely sound we enjoy...
In describing that, i have heard some FULL absorbsion baffles [and much lighter obviously for race purposes] to sound proper,but i am wondering how the engine pulse [or BARK], is defeated...maybe these Tea Strainers that i know would work...but..restrict exhaust gas flow...especially at high engine RPM, unless backpressure is wanted.?
I have a single system that has a full tube and no baffle, it has the perforated tube and matting fibre glass to give the "thrumm" sound, but ive got to fit rolled CHICKEN WIRE to stop the pulse [ it doesnt really] ..
And for noise..the yoshi sys not much more than a modded old system..definitly OK for traffic ...
Any thoughts on this topic appreciated.

There are several types of baffle tubes available the best type for taking out the `rasp` are those with machine punched holes, these are more akin to chisel strike holes so that a portion of the deformed tube acts like a raised fish scale diverting some of the sound pulses into the baffle wadding.
My Skorpion has a straight through abosrption tube alloy can on it most of the time, around 450 mm long that I made myself. Nice boom and a wicked rasp too. Some say it sounds like a Chinook helicopter as it approaches.

Ive just noticed that you might think that the END part of the end can baffle in the photo is empty..?there mince.
But it has two tubes around 35mm dia , banana shaped to start in the middle and emptying to the outer of the end compartment, and then the other,.. at the oposite side , exiting to the centre of the exit tube...[a reverse flow baffle.].
Esentially to stop engine pulse but not performance sapping gas flow..
