Cam chain replacement

Call me thick, but I can't figure it out... I've searched here & I've read through the service manual, but to no avail...

I assume you need to remove the oil pump cover to get to it?

I was going to do valve seals, cylinder hone & cam chain all at once, but I can't see myself getting to the rest of it anytime soon, & the cam chain rattle is almost louder than my exhaust!

how many K's do you have up on the motor??? maybe it's the camchain tensioner sticking..... At 100,000 km when mine was done.the mechanic mentioned the life of the chain was pretty good and still had a few more clicks to go on the adjuster

...and the pump, mind you that the screw heads on those are made of cheese. Be careful! (and correct size screw driver!)

Too hard, pass.

At least 30K, I bought the bike at 13K, killed the engine at 18K, the bike now has 50K on it. I have no idea of the K's on the replacement engine, but I wouldn't be suprised if the engine's got 100K on it now.

I have a cam chain sitting there, it appears I now also need an oil pump gasket!

Thanks for the info KW, I assume a gasket is the only other replacement part I need...

It may be prudent to also buy a cam cover gasket (o-ring) and the top coolant o-ring, as they suffer heat hardening over the years, then they can break JUST as you reassemble the motor leaking oil and/or coolant everywhere {once you get her going eh }
cheaper overseas than here to get the gaskets in a set rather than pay Yamaha AU thru the nose.

I replaced those when I replaced the engine, so I expect they should still be ok, but I'll definitely check them, thanks for the info!

Don't forget that besides the oil pump cover gasket, each oil pump also has a gasket that should be replaced. There is also an oil ring that is meant to be replaced on the return pump.
