won't rev over 5k

Post by mrgreen » Sat May 04, 2013 8:24 am

Hello all, new to the forum and i am posting on behalf of a friend whose mother tongue is not English! (we are in Salzburg), anyway over the winter he rebuilt a TRX as a cafe racer (will try to post a pic but not sure how) with free flowing exhausts and a mechanic put a kit into the carb(I am geussing he only set them up on the bench), he's just put it on the road and it won't rev over 5k, i have had a search around but haven't found anything on how to set the carbs up after installation, any pointers in the right direction or any other suggestions of what the problem could be would be much appreciated,
thanks,
Rich.

Possibly float level.. I think it may be 14mm and I'm sure there will be confirmation on that from helpful souls on the site

Does the power cut dead at 5k (ie electrical issues/restrictor) or is it a gradual tailing off of power (fuel)?

You would hope that a mechanic rebuilding the carbs would set the float levels and do a basic balance of the throttle plates (butterfly's). I take it throttle cables have been set correctly and you are getting full opening of the plates?
Keep calm and topp up the oil

thanks for the replies, gradual like fuel starvation, any links to setting up these carbs, i'm not so convinced the float levels were correctly set.

I've once had this problem on an FZR that had a similar airbox to the TRX. On that it ended up being because the rubber that seals the airbox to the carb had perished, gone had and the airbox no longer fitted well. I'm no expert, but if that airbox isnt fitted properly it runs like ass. I assume its the same for the TRX. Havent tested it. Easy to check. I'm pretty sure on the standard carbs you NEED an airbox. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
Here for a good time, not a long time.
