Sounds very true!burty wrote:Yes but the fact that Yamaha list the same part number for replacement parts for the different year doesn't mean that the original parts fitted to the two years were not different. if you see what i mean. If the original valves fitted to the 96 bikes were substandard then it's reasonable to expect the replacement to be the new spec.Killerwhale wrote:Maybe Yamahas part number will help!? Here are the -97:

Noticeable though....-96 got the same part numbers....
...perhaps i did not get the question at all!

Part numbers won't help, as the number is not stamped on the valves. Ask the dealer what? Doubt they'd know anything about such an old bike - they'd likely just tell me the part number hasn't changed!
I noticed that the part numbers for the 96 and 97 valves is the same. I'd expect different numbers - at least a suffix change, 00 to 10 or something, although I agree with burty - just because the number hasn't changed doesn't mean the valves are the same.
Maybe the stretchy valves were just a bad batch, and the "new" valves don't exist? Was there ever a problem on the XTZ750 or 3VD TDM with inlet valve stretch, cos the TRX valves are the same?
But the question was, when did the "new" valves come in?
Reason being, I have a head from engine number 148** or something - so if this is after the "new" valves came in, I have a set of "new" valves. And I suspect they are, because the shims on them seem to be quite big, whereas the head I have from an earlier engine has lost all clearance on the inlets and needs much thinner shims.

still none the wiser steve, but as you have a frame later than 13284 I'd take it you have the "new" valves.
have you checked your clearances? what mileage is on your motor?
later this week, maybe next weekend, I'll be pulling out what I think are "old" inlet valves to give them a measure. I'll post if I find owt untoward.

i did check the valves when i got the bike ,it was showing 17,000 miles and they were all perfect, ive only done about 2,000 miles since as ive rebuilt the whole bike (forks, bodywork and loads of bearings) i will run the bike this year then i may change it for a superduke ,we will see ,my mates just got one so it will be interesting to see if i can hang on to him on the A&B roadsyoungy wrote:still none the wiser steve, but as you have a frame later than 13284 I'd take it you have the "new" valves.
