Hi ya :D
Congrats on the new wheels. Vely noice :D
I believe thunderchuck calipers are different to r1 calipers, i think they have a link pipe fron one side of the caliper to the other side and they are not MONOBLOC like the r1's:? anyone else know for sure :?:

I just got 150 miles from nearly full to reserve, is that bad ?
Note that if the bike has had cans and a DJ kit on it and the original cans put back on, it may not be jetted perfectly - your emulsion tubes (a.k.a. needle jets) may not be the sole cause of this. :) Check all the jet sizes are correct and clean them all up carefully, plus check needle clip setting, when you do the job.

Since you have the factory pro tubes to do, I would suggest, if you haven't already, that you get ALL the carb gaskets and o-rings from Yamaha. They probably are fecked - they certainly were on my '97 bike when I did the job two years ago, and once you take everything apart, they likely won't reseal properly.

I had also heard suggestions (maybe from Factory Pro, actually) that the cause of the wear is the fit between carb slides and the carb body (movement causes needles to erode the emulsion tube walls), and that it's preferable to replace the slides when you do the emulsion tubes.

As people have said, throttle cable and chain make a difference with these bikes, so check throttle is set spot-on, the chain is properly adjusted, the rear wheel is properly aligned (well, at least the adjuster blocks!) in the swingarm and the back brake isn't dragging before you work on the carbs.

On the brakes, any blue spots will fit. Non-radial six pots are not off an R1, but I think I know the ones you mean. Are they FZ1? Something like that. No idea if they fit, but you most likely won't see any meaningful benefit from anything more than decent blue spots & matching master cylinder (TRX one has a larger internal diameter and doesn't give as much braking power). Don't honestly think the bump damping (what fast bump?) on the stock forks would like anything stronger than blue spots, plus you may just be adding unsprung weight in return for extra pad area that you really don't need on a 190kg, 135 mph bike (bit different if you're trying to keep the brakes cool on a 270kg, 190mph Hay Abusa'...).

I have a set of YZF1000 Bluespot Calipers on mine - non monoblock, balancing pipe ones.

They work very well indeed, way improved over the stock things which were basically a death trap, even wiht new pads, braided lines and new discs.

Still dont think I have enough brakes to make me happy though :( Need to change master cylinders I think.

Thanks for all your advice folks. I made sure the throttle cable & chain were set right but no difference. Fitted the needle jets a few weeks ago now but only went out on the bike last week as it was awaiting other parts. Snatchy throttle has gone now so must have been the tubes. As for front brakes, I may have blagged myself a YZF front end complete so I'm guessing the brakes from it will be an improvement over standard TRX ones ?

Yes, but by general consensus not as good as the newer 4-pot Sumitomos.

And the 6 pots are supposed to be prone to siezing.

If they're non-monoblock then why do they have link pipes for each side? I think you'll find they are one piece...

No more so than any other Yamaha caliper... it's just that as a general rule they're older and therefore more likely to be seized in the first place.

I actually really rate the 6 potters. They are more-or-less as good as R1 type but a bit heavier... if you've got a useable set I'd try 'em out at least. Plus they'll work spot on with te standard 16mm Master cylinder.

I had a feeling the YZF 6 piston calipers would be somewhere near as good as blue spot ones & if they come free with the forks & wheel it would be a shame not to use them.
I have been sent these few pictures of the front forks but when I zoom in, the chrome looks pitted slightly to me ?

Wheel & brakes not shown but are part of the deal.

I run the 6-pots. I can't fault them for what they are really. They give great feel and haul the bike to a stop rapidly. The 320mm discs help a hell of a lot too.

Would happily take a full YZF front end with 6 pots for my bluespots :) lol

NUTS ! I was a bit sus' regards this YZF front assembly I "was" buying so asked the seller for some close up shots of the chrome on the legs. Communication/replies to emails being instant up until this point. Waited days for a reply, pestered some more until I got one saying they were now sold. Hmmmmmm ?
So, now that's all gone tits up I'm looking at blue spots again for now & have 1 last question if you don't mind ?
Why have some of these calipers got a link pipe from one side to t'other & some haven't ? Looks like early thundercat/ace ones are more likely to have the pipe on them. Were the later ones re-designed with the link bit inside ? Are the early ones any worse or just the same but different type thing ?
Ok that might be 3 questions. :P
I'm trying to buy the whole assembly from one bike with master cylinder included but being impatient will probably buy the 1st pair of calipers that come along & look for a m/c afterwards.
Do they all have 14mm m/cs if blue spots are fitted ?

4 questions then. :D

I have a pair of link-pipe blue spots on my bike which I could sell you, if you want. Will be replacing the front end next week, so they will be coming off.

In practical terms, there's no difference in performance. The later calipers might be slightly lighter and stiffer. AFAIK, the smaller M/C size is used for all of them. Best to get your m/c, clamp, lever and reservoir as a set. No real difference in price, if you're willing to wait and watch for a little while on e-bay. But apparently not all of the foregoing are identical on different Yams.

I'm a bit surprised everyone seems happy to go with a 14 mm M/C. Original is 16 mm (5/8 inch) on both YZF and TRX. I happen to have a radial Brembo M/C but that one is 18 mm.
With blue spots (in silver actually) and braided lines you can imagine it feels a bit woody (I think that's it what you call it in english).
I also used this M/C with the YZF 6 pots, but the stroke of the lever remained way to big!
I'm now thinking of using the Brembo M/C and the 'blue' spots with the original rubber hoses to gain more feel  just because I am to vain to sell up the Brembo M/C (at least I admit it, alright?). 8-[
On the other hand, I think I've read somewhere radial masters should be bigger in diameter in comparison with axial masters.
