Sump oil level problem?

But it still will not register on the sight glass until the engine is running / has been run hot.

VICTORY!

So the problem wasn't oil level, as after adding an extra 500ml it still did not register, so i drained all the oil which was infact sitting in the sump.

After removing the sump i checked the pressure valve thing and it was fine, i stripped it and reassembled it to find no problems, also the bearing valve was fine.

I took a trip to mr.haynes and noticed something i didnt think could have been the problem!

The strainer was about 90-95% blocked with crap much of it metallic!

It was amazing the engine hadnt blown!

After cleaning the sump and the strainer of all the crap i reassembled, cracked an exhaust holder thingy, and snapped a stud, however with what little of the exhaust i had on i ran the bike and the oil is circulating beautifully.

At last.

Now i need two exhaust clamps and four studs.

So if the oil strainer was almost blocked it was the scavenge pump that was struggling to pump oil back to the tank, you actually had a wet sumped TRX!
At least all the clean oil assured the motor was fine while you`ve been running it up trying to ascertain the problem, especially as you`ve not been running it at high speed or for long periods.
How the ferk did you break one of the alloy exhaust collars or do you have a non standard system fitted?

The course oil strainer in the sump Al. I take it you`ve never cleaned it out? Mind your`s only having covered 10,000 odd miles it probably doesn`t need it.

hmm....

oil has been changed... prob about 4 or five times... usually do it every other year....

change the oil filter but never dropped the sump...Do you think this should be done.... do i need any sump gaskets or owt...??

a sump strainer???ok i guess that there might be a coarse item strainer in the works there somewhere..but i am guessing that if Mr Yamaha wanted me to service it regularly, an access appendage would be fitted...so...i am thinking that a strainer must be for worst case cenario down in the bowels...i mean isnt the OIL FILTER doing as its designed under NORMAL conditions??..and i would be alarmed that there is enough metal floating around the engine thats not being processed by the filter full stop.!...cant imagine that a decent service includes taking the SUMP off...the Japanese just dont do things like that and i would be concerned with a motor that has this problem...the way things are going with our bikes these days ..if youve got a good one that has been serviced and cared for...keep it..cherish the mechanism..THEY ARNT MAKING THESE ANYMORE..

There's a coarse filter in the oil tank also. Found out about it when I killed my first engine, it was mostly blocked and insufficient oil was circulating, just after buying it. It' a carbs off or engine out job I believe.

The strainer catches those heavier pieces of metallic pieces that the oil doesn`t carry to the filter. Obviously there shouldn`t be too many of these particles present in a `happy` motor but many engines go on for years without them causing problems after they become lodged in the strainers mesh.
I will be checking mine seeing as she`s got over 20,000 miles on the clock now and I`ve never checked it. It`s prudent to check it every few thousand miles or so.

Mincehead, one of the collars was cracked when i purchased the bike, probably due to over tightening, i simply finished it off today unfortunately!
