Rear shock, rebuild or upgrade?

Yes the SP unit is an Ohlins and the shock itself is a lot larger as in diameter than the std Trx unit . And don't stress Troy I'm sure you'll notice the improvement with the R6 option. I was looking at revalving the R6 shock to suit then I came across this other option

That is a key difference, unlike the provision of a multitude of high & low speed compression placeboes, the diameter of the main piston has a profound effect on damper performance. Larger the piston, the larger the piston ports, the larger & more flexible the shims. At high shaft speeds the damper will not reach orifice limitation as soon yet retaining subtle control at low shaft speeds. If the eye to eye distance on the SP shock matches the TRX & the spring weight matches your weight then you are laughing.

For those with an R6 shock,could you compare the circumference of the damper body with the TRX shock? This will be a good guide to if the the R6 has the potential to outperform the TRX unit.

R6 shock feels much more controlled than the standard. This maybe just because the old shock was well past it. All I've done so far is set the sag, haven't played with the dampening yet. Anyway, it certainly feels to be an improvement and was cheap and relatively easy to do.

diametre of the r6 damper is 46mm (144.5mm circumference)

trx one is 44mm (138.2mm circumference)

Is the YZF 750 SP shock an Ohlins unit? If so thats very interesting, keen to know the differences (eye to eye length, spring rate etc) between the TRX shock & the SP shock if it is indeed the Ohlins. Terry Hay was able to source Race Tech components to uprate my shock all those years ago because even though RT is a US company & the TRX was not sold in the states the non-SP YZF 750 was & the two shocks were basically the same. If that similarity extends to shock length & mounts you're on a winner.

I also have an Ohlins from a YZF750R on my TRX. The length is almost the same (a couple of mm difference). But a rebuild with altered damping was neccesary to make it work properly. The spring remained the same and is a little on the soft side.

The R6 shock replacement has been without doubt the best $ for improvement mod i have done.
$50.00US for a 2006 6000ks shock, and a home made adaptor, cant be bad, i would very much doubt even 4Xs that amount spent on the stock shock would get the same result.
