Managed to get her out for a short run yesterday, but misfiring badly on RHS pot. Probably ignition. Will investigate further over the next couple of nights. Motor felt strong though and no untoward noises.
Ride Well!
Cheers, Dave.

Anybody got a decent lead set lying around? Mine are looking decidedly second-hand. May have a lot to do with the misfire.

Before you find another set of leads Dave,.just check that there isn't any RUB THROUGH on a piece of frame or other sharp
metal parts that are in there.
cars can have the same problem with age.
Easy to find if you have something like this..just start the motor at night with all light off and look for the blue sparks from the leads.
Otherwise, am I right that the spark leads are part of the coils ?

Simple job
Lead unscrews both ends from the cap and the coil.
Pick up 2 leads the same length or 1 lead twice the length and cut it.
Plus vaccum values with the different motor will mean you'll have to balance and tune the carbies again too.

Hey Dave,

Good to hear it is up and running.
I'm sure you would have, but did you stick new plugs in that motor?

Cheers,
Stu

Thanks guys,

yep will be going through all the above. There was a couple of new plugs amongst the stuff you gave me Stu, so I popped them in. I did put the stage 2 (I think you called them) carbies on along with the pod filters and the breather filter. Guess they're in an arbitrary state of setup? Still, the issue sure seems to be ignition related. Is still early days in the overall scheme of things transplant-wise and I need to double check all electrical connections and triple check all the plumbing. Not overly concerned at this stage. HT leads are not in the best of condition though and now that it's disassembled to "good" access condition (tank, seat and rad dropped), seems wise to replace what looks dodgy. Been doing late nights this week, so hope to get more time to investigate come the weekend. Will advise progress.

Just remember that 99% of ignition problems are caused by the carburettor.
Inlet manifold rubber? Air cut valve?
Wouldn't it be nice to have a fully tunable FI system on the TRX :)

My thoughts exactly dicky.
May be worth while starting with your tried and true original motor carbies and a simple basic set up.
Once you have a base set up, tinker from there..1 thing at a time.

Hey Dave,

With the carbs set up as they were (stage 2) you need to run the airbox with the K&N filter. With the pair of K&N pod filters it will be very, very lean and all over the place. If you want to run the pods you will need to put in the 170 mains from the kit box and then do some of tweeking. It can take a while to get the stage 3 set up right. Stage 3 set up is fun but is not really ideal for all around street riding as it really thrives on very aggressive riding and big throttle openings. Not so everyday streetable. The stage 2 set up will be the ticket and should result in a quick and very linear throttle response.

Give me a yell if you need clarification on anything.

Cheers,
Stu

Thanks Stu,

after I finish my HT audit I'll go back to the airbox on your (Stage2) carbs over the weekend and see what results that yields.
Have family chrissy stuff to wade through this weekend, you know what I'd rather be doing!

That combo was running perfect with that motor before it got a rest in the shed Dave. So any ignition gremlins aside, replicate that set up and you should have no trouble.

Turns out the family do is next weekend, so I've been able to get some time on BessT. Now purring like a kitten.

Couple of issues, the core being a very poor condition RHS spark plug cap as I suspected. I'll have to find something generic I think to replace it. Smeared a fair whack of dielectric grease all around the business end of the cap and misfire has vanished. The soft pliable seal around the base has turned into something resembling Bakelite and I think it might have been tracking a bit with residual washdown water.

I ditched the pod filters as you suggested Stu and went back to the standard airbox, a plug chop has confirmed it was waaay too lean.

Bit of a coolant leak to sort - dreaded carb heater circuit - then reassemble all and should be making a sortie on my hills tomorrow sometime!

Thanks for the help everyone. I'll post a pic if I get out tomorrow.
Ride Well!
Cheers, Dave.

After a cautious circuit of the village, I wandered aimlessly towards Wonthaggi and soon found myself on the Loch-Wonthaggi road. Man I'd forgotten how capable this thing is in the twisties with the new front end. After 11,000ks recently on the Tiger trip to FNQ and back I'm having to relearn this bike over. Tough job hey... Bit of hesitation off small throttle openings - any advice there Stu?

After the last dyno on it Dave, it was a tad lean (but not dangerously so) off small throttle openings.
The tuner said he wouldn't be concerned about it as I had it very close to perfect all round, but if it proved an issue to try upping the pilot jet one size or experiment with needle clip position. I was gonna play around with that but at the time Show n Go were out of stock of that size pilot jet. As I was happy with it everywhere else and the hesitation was only very slight I settled for pulling the throttle faster and harder.
But you could tinker with one or both those and see how it goes.

Cheers,
Stu
