Asking for a bit of advice from all............

I am fitting an R1 front end on very soon but have given little thought to the rear until now. I have read that the TRX standard rear sus is pretty poor and I am finding that its bouncing all over the place and after lots of adjusting its no better.

Now opinions please. Shall I keep the rear suspension and get the old unit serviced, re gassed oil and maybe a new progresive spring, or fit maybe an R6 unit with the adapter or would anyone recommend going for a aftermarket unit such as the Nitron mono/adjustable.

Money is not the main concern, to me if its is worth doing I'd rather do it right.

Go for an aftermarket unit purpose built for a trx.
The R6 unit may have the same stroke as the TRX but the swing arm lengths and relay arm and dogbones differ than the trx which all affect the rising rate suspension and internal damping within the shock itself.
Find something with a remote resevior like the std.
I set up Janets nephews hornet 900 with a wilbers and for $950 it was sprung to your weight ,colour choice on the spring , 2 speed compression and rebound adj.
You'll find they have a larger piston size and more oil capacity than the std trx too(43mm v 46mm) so less fade as the oil heats up.

Have you tried more compression/rebound damping and less spring preload than the owner's manual suggests? Works okay for me though it is quite hard.

As Cobba said, or if you don't want to spend as much you can get the OEM unit revalved and resprung for about a 3rd the cost of an aftermarket unit.
I did this to balance out the suspension after fitting my revalved and resprung R1 front end and it worked perfectly.
Keep un mind though something like a Wilbers will be that little bit better and more tuneable.

Ditto on rebuilding the std shock if you haven't got the finances for an aftermarket shock.
You can place a gold valve in there too for an extra couple of dollars but for $200-$250 for a rebuild it pretty good value. Especially if you 70-75kg rider weight which the std spring is rated for.

Once upon a time I was 70-75kg, alas no more. About 82kg now me thinks, no a fan of scales...

i have found a nitron for £589 for adjustable or a mono for £369, the wilbers do seem a little too expensive but again if its worth getting I'll just have to do a bit of saving first.

Nitron put out some good products too, but it's worth your while going for the full adjustable, most seem to make a street version including Ohlins now with just rebound adjustment for around $700 but for half that price you can have the std shock rebuilt and sprung to your weight with a 1.0 mm/kg spring.
