Does anybody know why or how this could happen to the clutch plate? There is no scaring or metal in the case every thing in the carrier looks a ok.
Next..... Does anybody have an old clutch or a parts motor i can pinch some fiber plates out of, so i can see what happens before I fork out for a new one???

Can't help with spare plates, but if you need a new set I bought some in Oct via ebay from Italy.
EBC Kevlar SRC009, 121 Euro plus 40 Euro for delivery via registered courier, was $242 AUD at the time, probably a bit more than that now.

Chances are that the clutch plates are generic to other yams as well..
Check with your local dealer ?
You might have a kit sooner....

As for your old clutch plates....can I see your rear tyre ?

The Sigma slipper clutch for the TDM/TRX also fits many/most of the other 5 valve Yamaha motors; YZF750, 1000 EXUP etc (check the Sigma website).

The stock plates slide straight into the slipper basket so should be many options for used plate sets.

The TRX clutch is pretty bullet proof even with lots of engine mods.

Not sure why the friction material would debond like this; was it just one plate or many that looked this way? What is the mileage and were there any symptoms before failure occurred?

Just looking again at the image, I recall now that the friction material is not bonded to a steel backing. Excessive thermal exposure will age most polymer materials but sounds as though the clutch is not discoloured from excessive heat.

Vibration is another thought (mechanical damage) but cannot see why this would occur unless the clutch basket roller bearing is shot (unlikely). Would expect to see widespread damage not just one plate?

There's no ridged wear on the outer basket slots where the plates locate and slide is there? I have seen this get quite bad and could result in bending of the plates when the clutch is operated. 'Clutching at straws' a bit.............pun intended

Fingers crossed replacement 'used' plates will do the trick.

I'm running R6 kevlars in mine and as dimwitty and Alex mentioned, clutch plates from a number of yamahas are interchangeable.
Stack height was spot on with the r6 friction and std trx steel plates too.

I hated Kevlars, clutch was really grabby and I could not get of the line smoothly and it made a horrible noise

I got over the whole second hand hunt and ordered 9 new plates of Yamaha there only $12 bucks each so hopefully Thursday night if i can get of going xmas shopping with the misses ill get it done and hopefully that will be that :/
