Due for a new battery as I got caught out at work the other day with a drop out. 3 Years on the old battery so not surprised. It had a tough winter where the bike stayed under cover for a couple of months and never really recovered.

My local Yamaha dealer will replace but at $200 I was wondering if there is a mandate to replace with that battery or another similar battery for cheaper. I understand that generally the cheaper batteries have shorter life span but I am not convinced the local dealer is giving me best value for money?? Any advice welcome. I am after best value for money.

Also............ the guy I bought the bike off said the it has a security setting which prevents the bike from starting if the voltage is low. Apparently preventing you from push starting it. Does such a system exist? Any info welcome.

The high compression might stop you bumping it but thats all.(unless you have a fancy alarm with immobiliser). You can use any battery that fits, but go for a YTX12 or a higher number. Yuasa are very good if available.

$200 for a battery, they are ripping you off.
You can get a Motobatt for $90 or a Yuasa for $140. Both are good batteries.
If you shop about you can often find them a little cheaper than that too.

Having tried to bump start my TRX I would say it's an almost impossible task, the rear just locks and skids or you have to use such a high gear that the engine barely turns over. I bought the cheapest YTX12 I could find afterwards, a Numax, and it's fine 2.5 years on

$200 you can get a lithium ion battery.

I will have a scout around and see what I can find. I assume I can get those brands at my local Autobarn/ Supercheap / Repco. I think at the moment they will give me $15 for taking my old one in on selected brands. I will stick to the suggested brands in any case.

Battery was about 9V before start up yesterday so no hope for it.

How much more life would I get out of those batteries with a trickle charger? The guys at the shop suggested another 9 months to a year. As I only use the bike part time and not a daily ride I have often thought about it but not keen on faffing about if the benefit is minimal.

I replaced mine with the aforementioned Yuasa from Battery World - I've dealt with the stores at both
Midland & Joondalup & been happy with the knowledge & service they give.

Mine cost about $130.00 from memory.

I've also used these batteries in my GSX550 Suzuki & they've been lasting just under 4 years each time.

Best local place has Katana batteries for $115. I notice that no-one has mentioned these batteries yet and was wondering if is because they are no good or just that no one else has one?? I assume they would be okay?

Take the battery out of the bike and keep it indoors when you lay the bike up. It'll last longer.

Never having done this I cant attest to whether it works or not ... But take battery out and drop it from about 10to 12 inches so it lands flat on the bottom and apparently gives the insides a good shake up and you get a bit more life out of it after a good charge... Maybe just gibberish but worth a go before spending?

Re: the roll-starting. I've started mine easily enough in 2nd or 3rd gear. You need a good push on flat ground though. Slight downhill no worries. But... with a low battery, even a roll start may not work. If the battery has been flat and you charge it, the green light on the charger may indicate voltage only. I found that I needed to leave on tickle charge for a few hours longer in order for the battery to delivery enough amperage.

Re the security question... roll-start prevention would be possible if a coded key or remote transmitter was being used to allow the security system to isolate ignition from the ECU . Maybe Google the security system for details.

Good score and good value ... I looked into the SSB lithium too
but settled with a Shorai lithium-and no issues at all over the past 7 months.

I went for a slightly larger 18 series with 270 cranking amps to deal with the higher compression that the 14 series with 210.
But for a std motor , I'm sure the 14 series would be quite AMPle
