Hi,

Am sending my shock off to Maxton for a rebuild/new spring. If I support the front wheel and then use a ratchet strap off the garage joist to raise the rear should I be able to get the shock off?

As long as the bike is stable and the rear suspension is unloaded, you will be able to remove the rear shock.

The bike cant float about a bit on a ratchet strap. A good option is:

1. Put the bike on a paddock stand to lift the rear off the ground
2. Pit a step ladder in place spanning the tail. Ovver the tail so one side in in the left of the bike and one side is on the right
3. Use a stout piece of timber and rung it through the ladder rung on the left and under the tail, and through the rung on the right.
4. Remove the paddock stand and the back of the bike will be held up by the tail sitting on the timber

Or get some steel bar that will fit through the swingarm pivot (5mm or 6mm I think) and put an axle stand on either side.

I use a pair of oversize axle stands and a big steel bar through the rear of the frame.

I found with the weight of the bike, hanging is not an issue and gives a clear working area with no stands to get in your imediate way.
With the front wheel held in place either by a transporter stand or using 2 stands and a rod through the unused mounting holes at the front of the motor.
Once the strap takes the weight you can still keep the rear wheel on the ground for added stability.
Changing ride height with shorter dog bones , just tighten the ratchet strap a little more to get your added lift and align holes..

I managed to get my rear shock out but had to undo the hose to the resevoir as there was not enough room to squeeze it past the frame/mudguard/rectifier.This wasn't a problem as i am having the shock serviced.My worry is getting it back in as a complete unit without having to strip half the bike down to do so.Would removing the rectifier give me enough room?
