rear shock/linkage/ride height

Have been reading through here, and there is so much to try and make sense of.
First question i have is about the rear shock. If by using a different shock with an adapter, lets say the bmw s1000r with the r6 adapter. I dont know how long the adapter and the BM shock together would end up (longer than stock shock), and as has been suggested on here that if using the BM shocker it's not safe to bring the size of the adapter down as it would weaken the adapter. But is this an attempt to keep the length same/similar as the trx standard shock.(i assume the adapter brings the r6 shock to the same length as stock shock?)
What is the issue with overall length being longer?
does something get in the way or not work? .. I can envisage an issue with side stand but that's easy to overcome (owned a ccm 644 while back and that had a hideous lean angle)

Have also read here somewhere that you can use the shock linkage from the yzf 750 and this jacks the rear up... if using the stock shocker. if you make dog bones shorter you get rear end lift, the linkage swap has the same effect.
So ...onto my second question ... by changing the linkage you have either created more room for a longer shock or less room and therefore a shorter shock ..??

Have a search on the web and research about rising link suspension.
The relation between dogbone length, relay arm and the effects on damping.
Swing arm length comes into play on the damping set up on the rear shock.
The stroke of the shock comes into play too.
