Hello!!

Is time for an oil and filter change on the TRX.... do you guys recommend any brand of oil? what type of oil will suit the TRX best?

and any particular tips for changing the oil on the TRX?

On my thundercat is dead easy...but I´m looking forward to do it on the TRX as I don´t have 234256 bolts to undo just to remove the fairings! lol

There are a few things to remember.

There are two drain bolts, one at the bottom of the 'sump', and one just behind the oil filter housing.

When removing the oil filter cover to get the filter out, don't lose the little metal bush and O-ring from the oilway at the front of the housing.

When replacing the filter make sure it goes in straight (it's easy to get it slightly off centre and a hamfisted mechanic can can just bolt up the housing without realising that it's possible for oil to bypass the filter.

Be Careful not to overtorque the filter cover bolts.

Oil capacity is 4.2 litres, you'll probably need 4 litres or slightly more if you get all the oil out. So you may need to invest in more than one can of oil. (If memory serves me correctly the owners handbook has a different figure and is incorrect).

As for oil. I've been using Rock Oil Guardian, and prior to that Silkolene Comp 4, but I think you'll get any number of recommendations from here.

Do you also find that when checking the oil level in the site glass it varies - sometimes in the halfway (correct) level and sometimes completely full especially after a run out???

i went for a run today to devils bridge when i got there i nearly shit myself as there was hardly any oil in the window so i took it easy to a garage and bugger me when i stopped it was reading full in the window can someone PLEASE tell me what the billy buggery is going on ????

It's all to do with the dry sump. Sometimes (depending on the where the pump stop's after a run) the oil can drain into the sump a little over a period of stationary time. The best time to check the level is after a decent run, leave for 5 minutes or so, then check.
I found that if I checked the level as above, then checked the following morning, sometimes it would be at half level, sometimes OK. Then I'd start it up for a minute or two, turn it off, then have no oil in the sight glass at all.

I'm running Motul 7100 20W/50W and I never look forward to changing it...

Whatever you use, I'd suggest using a "heavier" weight and stay away from the 5W sewing machine oil. The TRX doesn't rev to the moon and the thicker oil keeps things quiet.

So I think I'll buy some 20W/50W and do the oil change this weekend..

Also have to take the clip ons off and top yoke to tighten the headsock as it's making a bit of a clunky noise..

I went to the garage today to buy the oil and they guy there said that 10W/40W Semi-sinthetic would be fine for the TRX....

I didn´t buy it in the end as I wanted to ask here what do you guys think....

10w40 will be perfect for trixy its what yamaha did all there testing on just keep it topped up, they like a bit of oil

10W/40W in the "Old Dart" will proberly be OK. 20W/50W here in Oz is the go.

Only one brand that's good enough for the TRX
