Hi all, I've bought a chain and sprocket kit from ebay for my bike (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/130754116710? ... EBIDX%3AIT) but it is the type which has a link rather than the endless type which needs to be peened over - is this OK? My Haynes manual says not, only use an endless type.

As you can tell by my gormless ramblings I'm a bit confused....

I would be surprised if the DID chain did not come with a rivet type joining link. Mine did.
I run an endless chain on my TRX but a clip type link on my motard, and I thrash the motard a lot harder than the TRX.
Either is good, just make sure the clip is facing the right direction, closed end facing the direction of travel.

Spat the chain on mine about 18mths ago but I'd used that clip link about 3 times.
Luckily I was just taking off and about 10 feet down the road.

My opinion, not necessarily advise:

Again with everything it depends how you ride, if your bike is a garage queen that gets taken out on sunny days for a 30 round trip to a village pub, I wouldn't worry about it. If you are using the bike every day in all weathers I'd be inclined to use a riveted link for peace of mind. You'll probably never pop the link, but you'll cursing yourself if you do as you can guarantee it will in the most inconvenient place/time (Cobba you got bloody lucky!).

Pocket the quick link (add it to the tool roll for emergency use) and buy a rivet link, as long as its the same 5xx number it 'should' be fine, assuming its a standard 525 chain.

I've always used linked chains on very bike i've had, from my 175 Honda all the way to my 1100 Katana and now TRX, without any issues.

If you might be changing or swapping over your drive gear for whatever reason, then the link is your option.
Had and hammered the machines that had them, but if I had a choice, I'd go the riveted type....if riveted properly,..it's the more....permanent..( but a one use only).. Not like the link type

My last chain came with both types of link ,I fitted the rivet type and have the clip type under the seat . But clip type is OK to use ...

Get the proper tool and a bunch of links. You can't do it properly (if at all) without the right gear.
