I read through all the posts and despite people having purchased broomsticks etc and made tools, nobody actually says what size the bolt must be to make your own tool.
Please help...would be much appreciated.

I think he means what size bolt head will fit into the top of the damper rod, in order to stop it turning.

I used an imperial size, found it in a jar that is never looked at.. Couldn't tell you what size it was. I don't think anything metric was a decent fit though.

I used broom handle with tube spanner wedged onto it. at a guess id say it was around 21mm, it was the outer edge of the tube spanner fitting inside the top of the damper tube or whatever.

Thanks Jim, but it did not work.. tried the broom thing with 19,something mm and 20,something mm tube spanners. Felt far to loose. tried 22mm and 24mm as well...next will be 27mm.
wonder if there is a difference between Japanese and euro models?

Nope, all identical as far as suspension goes, brakes and carbs differ though. ;)

This isn't true, I found my 4NX damper rods to be 2cm shorter than normal, and the rebound circuit to be set up differently too without a small hole in the lower part of the rod, and the compression holes were bigger too. The basic construction seemed to be similar though.

This is what I ended up with, does that help? No? Dang.

I did the same Mr Blatter.... It was and is a 27mm bolt head that fits into the damper Rod. Although not all 27mm sockets will fit down the tube.
At least now I am sorted.
