import oil filter shorter neck????

ok peeps i have a import trx (like you do) and the oil filter has a shorter neck on it than the uk ones?
you know the bit that sits at the bottom of the filter.
now with the uk filter you can see that it will block more of the hole in the bottom filter casing thus restricting oil flow (not good).
now has anyone else noticed this and if so where can i get the import filter from with the shorter neck???? (had to block the last uk filter with bluetack and cut the neck down, but this is not advisable).
any ideas peeps????

That really sounds as a good Q&A for Yamaha directly! Never read of this anywhere but if it´s true the consequenses could be really horrid!

If it's true then either imports must have a different filter housing cover, or non-import models are OK to partially block the hole. Both of which seem unlikely.

Hmm.. In fact I did a recent oil filter change and bought the filter from Yamaha.

When I was goin to fit the filter it seemed that was bigger than the original one that was there as the cover didn't close so well…
I took the filter out, the new one, and compared again with the old one and they seemed exactly the same..

So I put it in place and closed the cover…seems alright, but now that you mention it I'm in doubt if it's ok or not..

the filter body's r the same or as dam as its only the bottom neck that sits into the bottom filter housing that is longer on the uk ones.
now when i last got a filter from my local yam dealer it had the long neck hence the need to cut it down.
if it was not cut down it would have partly blocked the hole leading into the engine bit's.
now thats not good in my book coz it would have restricted the oil flow and also increased the oil pressure inside the engine.
i will try and find the old filter out and give you an idea of the neck length.
if not perhaps someone from japan can have a measure of the filters that they can get out there and then i can make a proper comparason.

That would be my question, and I HIGHLY doubt there is any difference in "Import / Export" models...

The filter is always a "damn, this can't be right" kinda fit. I'm always afraid I'm going to break the cover or crush the filter when tightening the bolts.

That was my thoughts also… as it seemed too tight.

But I've been running the bike with no problems..and have done about 600Km since I've changed the filter

Filter?

Hi I changed my oil & filter last week and used a champion filter for my local Halfords which fitted much better than last years dealer supplied part. Always take extra care to line up the small 'o' ring as the dowel peg can fall out of alignmet.

Mate this is not intended as a smart arse (theres that word again) reply but just as a thought, you are not putting it in upside down by any chance.

I checked my oil filter area when I got home today...and there is some drips of oil on the bellypan.. might be because I didn´t tight the bolts enough??

Also scared myself when I looked in the oil window and there´s nothing there... but can´t be, can it? 4,5L of oil can´t vanish like that..
and then I remember reading something here about it depends where the engine stops and all the oil might be in the sump?

how do I know now if there´s oil in there??

Run it for a good 15-20 minutes, go for a ride if you can....but that time should give you a fair indication in the window.

....TRX R scary.....4,5L CAN disappear!!

hmm... that´s weird then, because I checked when I came from work.. about 15min ride and couldn´t see the oil level....but looking really close with a torch I think i could see things moving in there.... like the whole window was full of oil...

but I can´t have too much oil, because when I checked before the oil was just a bit over half way on the window...

When i filled up my first time on the TRX i filled it over....pouring out of the filler....thought i was f**ked.....then after running for a while i had to put in more.....i guess filter etc. takes a whole lot.....
