Coils

After a bit of feedback, I'm suspecting that my 4,500rpm flat-spot is probably coil-related. Now bear with me here, because I'm new to this:
1. There's two of them, right...mounted either side of the frame just behind the headstock?
2. Are they usually sold as pairs, or singles...and is there any difference at all between the one on the left and the one on the right?
3. When I search for them (eBay, where else?), they appear to be year-specific ie. they are sold for 96, 97, 98 etc bikes, and are referred to as 4UN-1, 4UN-2 etc. Is there any difference between these?
4. Should I be replacing them as a pair?
