i know this has been talked about but surely my temp gauge isnt working.
it barely gets close to 60, it only moves about 1-2mm from the pin?
is this normal or should it reach a temp above 60.

i always let the bike warm up before going out...
fire it up, blip the throttle gently a few times and then let it idle for a bit. within 5 mins the needle should be moving up to around the 60 mark. you can allow it to run for a while longer and the fan should kick in around the 90 mark (from memory). try it and you'll be able to test that the fan is working too

edit to say: when out on a run the temp rarely gets over 60 in my experience

my fan kicks in but temp never reaches 60...ever.
this make me think gauge is on the blink.
although when i turn on the ignition it does move slightly off the pin (1-2mm)

Fans kicks in at 104 IIRC

If fan is kicking in but temp guage is showing 60 then something is not right

In normal use, temp guage rarely climbs above 70

any ideas where to start?
new gauge?
is there a temp sensor?

Not 100% sure as I can't remeber how the circuit works - in fact I thought the fan was linked to teh same circuit as the guage so for the fan to kicj in without a temeprature being read (or red!) seems odd. Have you had a look at the manual? You can download it here

Let us know if you have any problems - it may be that the wire connecting to the rad hoses (in front of teh carbs) has become dislodged?

IIRC, you need to undo the front tank bolts (x2) and hinge the tank back on it's rear mount, not lifting too high as to disconnect any fuel pipes, and the temp sensor is in the outlet? pipe from the rad.

Unscrew it and take it out, it's a little silver dipstick-type thing with two wires attached. I'd give it some heat with a hairdryer or similar and see if it moves the gauge.

Do this with ignition on, but engine NOT RUNNING else the water pump will pump fluid out the hole the sensor came from.

long time since I looked, but isn't the sensor in the thermo housing instead of the rad?

had the bike in for a service today, didnt mention temp gauge but it has come back working...problem solved.
thanks to everyone who offered advice...i got lucky today
