I've sourced a couple of rims, recently re-painted, but in white. Knowing myself, this is not the ideal colour for my level of keeping the bike shiny...

The rims have been shot-peened (right word?, high pressure sand polishing) and powder-coated, and haven't been fitted since. I want the rims to have the original greyish colour, fitting a '96 red Rex with silver frame. So, does anyone know if there's a paint in this colour that can be used for powder-coating. Someone told me it's difficult to have other colours than standard white or black... Do I need to redo the sand polishing again, or will it be enough with only a slight polishing?

Powder coat comes in a big range of different colours, you should be able to find something that is a close match. Maybe places like doing black or white because it's common and they can do lots of stuff at once.

There are many ways of painting your rims. Or have them painted.

I am going to do the following when I get my butt into gear and make up my mind to take the bike off the road for a couple of weeks.

Have the present coating removed. This can be done by shot peening like was done to yours, or using a chemical stripper.

Spray one coat of an epoxy primer

Apply two coats of an acrylic epoxy metallic the desired colour. Many of these are available from companys that supply protective coatings for steel and architectural coatings rather than automotive. These coatings have a tendancy to be higher building an therefore can be stronger than automotive style products.

Then apply one or two coats of clear in the desired gloss level. I would use the generic of an acrylic urethane because these will withstand sunlight without chalking (Going dull) and have high chemical resistants.

Or

You can have them powdercoated again. This is probably easier. As mentioned there are many variations of powdercoating available, but you are still limited.

With paint the sky is the limit (Almost). You can put pearls in the clear, or even a multi colours flake over the base coat metallic. That looks hot :!: To achieve this Automotive clears are best to use.

I know this sounds like a load of tripe but it is a paint answer, rather than the dull finishes that are available by powdercoating. You can have either a dull look (low gloss) or the wet look (High gloss)

Thanks for good answers! I will go the powder-coating way, as this probably will last longer. I also intend to have the original colour. As I understand it, the fresh paint will have to be completely removed? Anyone that knows what code the original colour has?

All this in 2 hours work from a running bike. Not too bad. And all with the tools below and 12 bucks for the stripper.

Yeah not the best manored stripper I have run across. Has a very custic character :!: Bad enough to burn you. Little bit like what happens when the wife finds out about the stripper :lol:

Actually white with a good gloss coat isn't that hard to clean. The stock Yamaha white is shit and becomes chalky with time which is why it is a bugger.

The only reason my rims are black (with a hint of gold metalic) is because my YZF rear wheel came in the wrong color and it was easier to paint a white (front) wheel black than the other way around... :(

When I cleared the rims after polishing the outter rims I clear glossed the remaining white bits as well and forsure they where ok to clean. But I just wanted to do something a little different and I still had a problem with the white. It seems to make the bike look shorter, because the white is so definded I think. I wanted a bit of gold to show but the colour didn't really turn out that way. Now they are on the bike the colour dosn't really go with the bike, but I think it will when I get a belly pan on and painted the same as the wells. It will be like an under colour, with a white mid section and red upper.

Thats the plan anyway. Who knows how long it will take me to put a belly pan on? I have this aversion to buying stuff over the net that has to come from overseas. I think I am too impatient and have an inbuilt lack of trust. If it doesn't fit or is broken you would be up the creek without a paddle.

End of a couple of nights and one full on day painting. 5 coats of paint in total. The system was as discribed earlier in the thread.
