I've noticed that my TRX is running pretty rough - especially in the cold. I've had to replace the right-hand spark plug a couple of times now and I'm told that the bike is running rich.

Is this a problem with the "Emulsion tubes" that I've read about on these forums? What else should I check?

How many klms/miles has your TRX done? If over 30k klms/20k miles it could be the emulsion tubes. TRX 's usually run a little rich at idle and full throttle and a little lean in the middle.

It's a '96 model with 40,000km on it.

It's had work done to fix an oil leak but I'm pretty sure the carbies are untouched since new.

ALso, your RIGHT spark plug was going before your left ? interesting.. normally the left (as you sit on it) go first (i think.. i could be wrong..) either way.

Just take your time and follow a guide.. I have a full workshop manual i can scan in each relevant page and post if you so wish.. Else i can help or you can wait a few weeks and have mine if you so desire.

As for running rough.. Mine has just started it aswell.. Its the adelaide weather imo.. cold+wet -> hot+dry.. throws the carbies out heaps.. thus extra wear on them..

Only started noticing it since the fully synth oil change over.. New oil = thinner, thus engine makes more "noises".. old thick oil will ALWAYS quiten a motor down. So on oil changes you tend to hear a bit more for a little while..

Just a silly question - why did you replace the plugs?

What were they like when you took them out?

Unfortunately I didn't replace them, the mechanic did and I don't know what condition they were in. He thought it was a faulty plug but it's started running rough again.

could be a knackered lead?

It is possible.

The bike seems to run fine once it's warmed up. It's only when it is cold or has been neglected for a week or so that it has trouble.

+1 The more I ride it the less of a problem I have.
I have recently replaced the spark plugs but I know it's the emulsion tubes causing me grief. I'm putting off doing the tubes until I buy a pair of vaccum gauges.

From the sounds of it my carbies will be the next thing I need to sort out.

In the meantime I'll just have to make sure I don't let it sit idle for too long

I replaced the spark plugs again this weekend after it started belching out black smoke on the way home from work. The left one looked just like the "normal" picture in my workshop manual but the right one was black!

I'm going to take a look at the emulsion tubes this weekend - can anyone tell me a good place to buy parts? I'd like to have the bike running perfectly when I sell it.

you can buy kits from just about anywhere.

Yamaha on main north road should have em, if not, they can get em fairly fast. Else most places that deal in 2nd hand parts can possibly buy them.. Even a dynojet kit / e-tubes in one (if thats the direction you want to head).

Id personally say get the minimum required as you are selling it. Try yammys 1st, find out the lead time (if any) and then try a local one depending on suburb you are in. All else fails, good old show n go can sort you out, but obviously would be a 2-3 week wait since they dont stock it on the shelf, AND its the silly season, aussie post has their nuts against the wall currently... so wouldnt bet on fast delivery..

Even try evilbay maybe ?

The stock ones are $68 each or I can get the aftermarket ones from FactoryPro.com for US$58 (AU$65) shipped.

That's a pretty easy choice, I'll take the carbs apart this weekend and see if I need just the tubes or a full kit.

Another question... will I need to recalibrate anything when I reassemble the carbies? I haven't done this before so I don't know if I need to note any settings down as I take it all apart.
