I have a 96 rex and i have got 14,000 miles on it , only owned it a few weeks and seemed to have read a fair bit about cam chain tensioners/adjusters, needing replaced ( not so much on this site ) Questions?? do they need replacing at a certain point regardless of milage or just at certain milage intervals?
can i do it myself of is it a workshop job?
how can i tell if it needs replacing?
is it expensive?
the bike does have a amall contious rattle at the top but i always asumed it was just it being a big twin as it revs okay and pulls fine and the rattle doesnt get worse when ridden,or am i just misreading the signs
Thanks in advance
Just sourced a set of Blue spots from ebay for £35 a pair

I had my camchain replaced @ about 20000 miles - there was a constant noise which was quite noticable. Playing with the adjuster made no difference to mine, but you may have more success.
As I was having my local mechanic check all the shims (24000 mile service done early) I thought I may as well get the chain replaced since the top-end was coming off.
There's no set mileage for these things to happen - they just do.
Regarding reliability, it's highly unlikely the chain will let go causing mass destruction. You could probably ride it another 50000 miles until it sounded like a JCB digger, but only you know if it bothers you enough to replace. Or stick on louder pipes to cover the racket

idle is around 1150 iirc.
richness is likely to be emulsion tubes

cheers fella nice to meet you yeah been scouting this site alot and reading a bit about them emulsion tubes , are they rubber pipes that run off the carbs?

no. nothing like. the emulsion tube is a brass tube which runs through the middle of the carb. also known as a needle jet - the needle moves up and down inside it.
the wear is caused by the needle rattling against the emulsion tube and making it go oval. this reduces fuel metering and hence increases richness.
