Hello, this could be the 1st of many from me but I'll do my best to search the subject on here before I pester.
R1, R6, FZR, Thunderace/cat blue spot callipers, are they all exactly the same ???? I've seen gold spot ones too, are they the same just gold ?
What I'm asking is if I buy the whole assembly from say an R6, would that be the same set up component wise as an R1 or Thunderpants bike right down to the master cylinder/brake lever ?

yes there all more or less the same , the R1 set up uses a 14mm master cylinder and the gold ones are the same unless there radial of course , what year is your bike

Mine's a 97, P reg, black with black frame.
It just broadens the options when looking for a front set up knowing I can choose from any one of the above mentioned bikes, thank you.
I've also seen some R1 callipers which are 6 pot, would they be compatible ?

the mounting bolts are 100mm centres on blue spots , and to be honest i have never had a need for more brakes , if they fit they might look better !

R1s never came with 6 pots as standard, they were all 100mm Sumitomo blue or gold spot 4 pots. The 6 pots might be off a YZF750 or something, or are PFMs 6 pots?

i have some plant pots ,,,not much good for brakes though

No matter I have more important jobs to do to my bike over the winter before I change the brakes. Emulsion tubes being number 1 priority. Went to my local bike shop today (Knotts of Stratford) & had a good squint at the microfisch with the parts girl there but neither one of us could confidently identify the needle jets. I think it is called the "jet tube" or something on there but can't remember now. Does £20 each sound about right or does anyone know the exact Yamaha part number for them ? Please tell me I haven't got to start another thread already !

Thanks for that link. Those are the exact same pictures as I was looking at today so I'm still guessing a bit until I strip my carbs. Could someone confirm for me that on page 22 of the manual it is item number 35, part number 3GM14141-92, "NOZZLE, MAIN" that I need or do I just buy these and be done with all this fannying about ?

you can buy the, factory pro, ones and be done ,,they are also nickle plated so should last longer , i am sure there is a how to on here somewhere ,,,jak will be along shortly to put you right

The latest model R1 has 6pots. They are radial mounted though.


I've tried yzf750 calipers on my TRX, those were actually worse then the original ones.

Cheers all, brakes can wait, I just bought the ebay factory pro tubes tonight so fingers crossed it should cure my very snatchy on/off throttle & reluctant warm starting ?
I just got 150 miles from nearly full to reserve, is that bad ?

Snatchy on/off throttle could be due to a few things. First check the adjustment of the throttle cable, its the rubber sleeved adjuster in front of the ignition key. A mm or 2 of freeplay is all thats required. Secondly check your drive chain adjustment. Rex's are very sensitive to that. 240km to reserve does sound a little thirsty but not as bad as some i've seen. Hard starting could be a valve clearance issue.
