Just got a new (old) tank to replace my dented one.

It looks "ok" inside, not visibly rusty or full of bits of crap, but what would anyone suggest to clean it up: I'm thinking a slosh round inside with some fuel and then throw the fuel away?

Pretty sure there's no leaks to sort out.

you could try and put some rust remover inside if there's any in the nooks and crannies,, i would then take the tap off and run some hot water and a bit of fairy liquid through it , and use a clear fuel filter in the feed line to the carbs hows your hand ?

get down to tescos and buy 20 litres of value vinegar (13p a litre) - pour in - leave for 12 hours - sieve and repeat

..... Filter, then re-bottle the vinegar and either return it to Tesco on their 'return or replace' policy saying "it tastes a bit funny!", or use it for next season's pickled eggs/walnuts/peaches or even save some for your chips... it's what a real man does...

I've seen proof that vinegar is good at removing rust if left for a few days so I'm in the vinegar corner too. Also hear of people counting small bolts in to the tank & shaking vigorously but that would take an age to guarantee they had done anything I would have thought ? Be just my luck that 1 would get stuck too.

Just out of interest...what does the bolts in the vinegar do? Is it one of those chemical reactions where the coating from the bolts transfers to the rust patches??

No mate, the bolts are supposed to chip away at the rust when you shake the tank but as I say would take a heluva lot of shaking & a fair few bolts I should imagine. Bolts too big might dent the tank too.

Cheers for the tips. I'll have another propper look inside it, as best I can, and see if it's just a warm soapy water jod or a vinegar job.

Maybe leave the bolts thing for another day, cheers GB!!

when i did the tank on my old GPZ I used bolts to get the loose stuff out, then flushed with petrol a few times left it to dry then used petseal to coat and seal the inside.

If you do use petseal you have to keep turning the tank for a long time, I didn't and ended up with a great clod of it (and a very hot patch) on the top of the tank.

Some people flush with water then use acetone (nail polish remover) to remove any residual moisture.

Had a flush out of mine today and definitely rust at the very bottom of the tank.
Am thinking of going down the vinegar route and cleaning it out with that. Then give it a few days to dry and then coat it inside with Red-Kote, then hopefully no more problems.

Anyone got a good spare tank, with NO rust in it that I can borrow? (Only joking, though I might check out the prices at the wreckers)
