Brake bleeding why?

Post by AHTHUD » Tue Aug 04, 2009 8:29 pm

Just setting up my new blue spots and R6 mc. I see on this site that quite a few people recommend taping the lever back to the bar over night. Whats the advantage of this? and how does it help?

Just wondering :? :?

I think it's supposed to encourage any air in the system up to the top but I've never felt the need for it.

It leaves the system 'open' so air will rise and come out the top. Do it, its worth it.

Surely with the lever back to the bar the system would be closed not open :? It must be closed to get pressure in the lines. Wouldn't the system be open when the lever is in its rest position (the open system allowing fluid from the reservoir to keep fluid topped up)

In theory, the air gets out easier under pressure. With the lever to the bar, the system is closed of course. As soon as you release the lever again, the trapped air will escape to the reservoir.

Seems sensible. For all those with this set up Bluespots/braided lines/r1 MC how hard have you managed to get the lever pressure? I'm setting my sytem up on a temporary rig at the moment (spare front end) and after bleeding and an overnight with the lever strapped back I have pressure and piston movement but I can pull the lever right back to the bar using moderate force. I want to try and get the set-up fully bled prior to fitting it to the bike so I dont have too much down time with the bike out of action.

Should go rock hard mate. Surprised me how long it took to bleed mine for a system with only a thimble full of fluid though. Maybe you, like me need to keep at it a bit longer ?

I found the same, seemed to take forever to bleed but lever pressure should be really firm, with much better feel for pad take up than the OEM set up. You just have to be patient and keep bleeding, it will come good unless there is an issue with air getting in somewhere.
It must be true, I read it on the internet.

you've either got air in the lines or you mc seals are knackered. I'd go with air in the lines
