Pulled the covers off the bike the other day to take it down the servo to put some air in the tyres and fuel in the tank as its been sitting in waiting the last 4mths and when i went to open the tank I could not turn the key... I quickly rode home and tried graphite... to no availe.. and have just tried some wd40 /crc to try and free it up a little but still no luck.. Looking at the spare tank it still looks like you need to unlock it to actually unbolt the whole tank cap unit to remove it from the tank.. Any suggestions on how to attack the challenge ahead.

Take it to your locksmith again, he should be able to sort it out if he is any good

You using the right key?

Yep, you need to have the cap unlocked to be able to remove it due to a security bolt underneath.

Sticking it in and wiggling it about a bit (cue fnar fnar comments.... ) but be careful as the keys are made of cheese: very easy to twist or bend.

Other than that, locksmith, as already said.

My lock is always giving some reistance, my solution is to push it downwards with one hand, turning the key with the other.

Well on my ignition it was partly worn and I found I had to push the key toward the top of the ignition and then it would turn perfectly...maybe a similar concept with your petrol cap

My key's a bit dodgy too ... same as Hans, have to push down to turn it. Plus once I've started the bike I can take it out and shove it in my pocket (always worried it'll come out on its own if I go over a bump!)

Yeah, not a good feeling when you can't trust the key-lock combination. Guess you've already tried "sort of wiggling it about and moving it up and down at the same time" to try aqnd fool the lock into opening?

I have my key on a short lanyard (pinched from the missus' mobile phone cover) and loop it over a convenient clip on the headstock. Also clips to an inside pocket when I'm off the bike so I can't lose the key (I'm getting on a bit now and have to think about these things !!! )

That's a Yamaha is-it-a-bug-or-is-it-a-feature standard.

Still have the spare key and both as bad or as good or as useless as each other they where working fine just it has been sitting so oviously the bolt has seized in place... Tried turning the tank upside down to lube the bolt also so think when I get it sorted I'll go change to a screw cap style same as tank on trackbike.. Thanks heaps for your input...

Good plan - that would have stopped me shutting it in under the pillion seat once I got a long lanyard thingy at Donington last year so I think I'll probably stick it on that and then just remove it once the bike's running and tuck it in my jacket! That is - if I ever get the bike running (and in the same part of the country as me!!!).

Well I've tried every thing maybe its like the female anatomy if I dont hold my tongue right it just doent open up

If your that stuck, drill it!!

You have to hold your tongue.......................as in with fingers or just shut up lol!!

mine does the sticking thing every so often, i take the key out, give it a whack with my gloved hand and then it works

MY FACE RACING came to the rescue and i just took the tank of my racebike while my tongue was occupied with a spectator...

Now that you have the tank off, how about setting it upside down, remove fuel tap, pour in 1x cup 2 stroke or engine oil, allow it to pool around the inside of the fuel cap for a cupla days and hopefully free up the latch etc.
Every month or so, spray some Lanogaurd on the rubber seal and the latch mechanism, works a treat
