No Tickover

Just bought a TRX 850 that has not run for 4 years. Fresh fluids and filter put in will only run on choke above 3000rpm. Once the choke has been turned off it dies. Runs on the road fine above 3000rpm with the choke off. Bike is completely standard, any suggestions?
Thanks
H

Tarnish and varnish in the carbs from stale fuel I reckon, strip them, re-set float heights, check jets etc and she should run fine.

Thanks for your reply. Have you got any advice on what I should use to tarnish and varnish the carbs. Thanks H

Just took my TRX out of the shed after it laying up for a year or so and despite making sure to start it every month and let it warm up it ran rough as hell.
Get a can of Halfords carb cleaner, strip and clean the carbs (check the emulsion tubes for wear while your at it) and refit 'em. Then having drained the old fuel out of your tank, fill up with superUL adding a shot of Redex and away you (should) go....

Sorry, crossed understanding Rookhill.
I MEANT there is tarnish and varnish from the additives used in modern fuels in your carbs.Stale fuel can leave such deposits behind and then a strip and clean of the carbs is required.

Hello, whilst at work with no internet access (fabricator) I asked my wife to ask the question of how to best remove the "varnish" left by the stale petrol. With wires crossed she posted the question of how to tarnish and varnish !! She 's not very mechanically minded but she does have a year 2000 R6, and having read quite a few of the post it seems that a lot of parts are interchangeable with the TRX. Bonus.
Any way carbs are off and cleaning will commence soon once I've picked TRX members brains on best method.
Again many thanks.

Depending on how bad they are aerosol carb cleaner usually does the trick but if there`s a lot of tarnish build up have them ultrasonically cleaned.
Luckily I have my own ultrasonic cleaner and usually find the expensive solutions are not always required either, strong detergent in hot water is normally good enough but can blacken some die cast alloys as impurities are brought to the surface and a certain amount of oxydisation occurs.

Hello, Stripped and cleaned carbs with carb cleaner, great stuff they were full of gunk.. Set pilot jets to 2.5 turns out and put every thing back.
It runs great, tick over spot-on and throttle response is clean right up to red line, BUT this only happens if the choke is out ONE click. Idle screw has no positve effect, nor adjusting throttle cable.
I know I cant be far off. Please advise. Many thanks.

put a search in on needle clip height or carbs, they have been discussed before.
Another TRX just up the road from me!

Hello, I'm pretty sure every thing is clean and clear and its not wear as the bike has only done 3027 miles and is 100% standard. Will try setting pilot a 3 turns out and keep you posted . Closer than you think Dave, my family are from Whittlesey Thanks Hayd.

3 turns seemed ok, choke was no longer needed and it ticked over. Throttle response was good but seemed to faulter on the way back to tick-over. Took it for a spin and it was terrible, only ran properly above 4000 rpm. Oh well, try again.
