Does any body know the correct cylinder head torque settings . I have been told 20 Nm and then 40Nm but this doesent seem tight enough to me

I've had a look at the factory manual (well worth downloading off the net) and the main head stud nuts are 40Nm and the two capscrews that seem to belong to the camchain cavity are 10Nm. Place a drop or two of oil under the nut shoulders, nip them down and then tighten using a crisscross pattern with a few stages of increased torque till reaching 40Nm.......hope that helps, good luck

Thanks so much for that . sorry for the late reply though. the job is now done and all seems to be in good order
Stange though ,I did the job because of ecessive oil consuption and smoke , but the piston rings were in good shape and no wear ridges in the bores. so im guessing that it was just the valve stem seals gone hard. I replaced the rings anyway

Re: cylindr head torqe settings
These ole darlings do tend to use a bit of oil as a matter of course. Sometimes that's the very thing that kills them.... when the oil level gets ignored and they end up running without. Yours must have been using a bit of oil to show smoke (assuming it's blue smoke). There are various theories as to why TRX's like their oil..... I had a similar issue with two Yamaha XT 500's, years ago. One had a previous hard life, and mechanically sounded like it had, and the second one I rebuilt totally. Both used the same amount of oil, and quite a bit of it, but never showed blue exhaust smoke. I might as well have had two strokes, as regards the oil consumption...... maybe it's a Yamaha thing with some models. I have assumed it is poor oil control with the pistons.

Re: cylindr head torqe settings
Hiya . yes this has had a hard life too. started life as a racer, and continued as . a track bike and Ive toured Europe with it. Its done around 50,000 miles so far. It was blowing out blue smoke after the over run and getting back on the gas. having said that, it is best to check oil after your ride . as the oil tank tends to leak down to the cranck case while being left for a while.giving a false reading when checking before your next trip. and thus overfilling!
You are right about the yamaha thing though. Ive had an R6 and a Thunderace. and they both used a lot of oil even at low milages. Conversley my old gixer hardly used any.
Having said that. I always said if I could only have one bike it would be the TRX, and thats exactly what Ive got. and I love it to bits!!
Penny.
