Hi, just tried removing the alternator cover so I can repair a few scratches and oil leaked from it as I losened the bolts. Should there be oil in there??? If not what is likely to be the cause?
Thanks.

Yep, there's oil in there - cools the alternator from memory

Will I need to drain the oil to remove the cover? I intended to do an oil change before it goes back on road in the spring so I want to run the engine to warm the oil but I was going to repair the alternator cover first. Do I need to drain the oil, repair the cover and then fill up with new oil or can I just catch the oil from the alt cover and then start the engine later without topping up the oil? Not sure how much oil to expect from behind the alt cover, will removing it empty the engine of oil?
Thanks.

Lay the bike on its right side and it'll be fine - doesn't need drained
