YZF750 Forks

Hi I recently bought some fully adjustable YZF750 forks to put on my TRX.
After failing to track down all the bits I need to do this for a reasonable price I decided to put them on my YZF to replace the none ajustable ones it had.
Before I fit them I thought I would strip them down and replace the seals and oil etc.
This is where I ran into a little problem and I wondered if it was something that any of you have experienced.
Anyway, you know the spacer between the spring and the top of the cartridge?
Well in the Haynes Manual (and all other forks like this I have stripped) it says there should be two holes in the spacer so you can fit a tool and pull down the spring to release the top of the cartridge, however my spacers don't have any!!!!
This has made stripping them a little difficult, but I managed but unless a drill some holes (which I am going to) putting them back together could be very difficult.
Your collective vast experience may well be off assistance.
