Hi

Can i have some help with the Oil pressure switch warning light wiring, a kit from Eise from the German forum ,and have wired it as follows :

Swiched live to the bulb then from the bulb to Oil pressure switch.

So now when i turn on the ignition i have a warning light and when i start the engine the light stays on I thought that the switch would cut the light as the pressure built up.

I have checked the continuity through the Oil pressure switch circuit to earth and have continuity wether the engine is running or not so is it the switch is U/S or have i wired it up incorrectly

Any thought would be apreciated.

It is my belief that the switch runs on an earth return to the bulb. So yes, the bulb must have a live, ignition derived feed to one side of it`s holder and the oil pressure switch makes the earth.
With oil pressure within the correct range the switch is in effect open circuit, if pressure drops off the circuit is made, lighting the bulb.
The light should be illuminated when the ignition is turned on, it should then go off when you start the engine (with oil pressure) and only illuminate if oil pressure drops below the switches threshold when the bike is running.
Have you earthed the opposite side of the bulb holder? Maybe if you utilise the position within the idiot light array there is a common earth rail already there, perhaps that requires to be isolated to that particular bulb holder?

I also have Eisi`s switch but am yet to fit it and I don`t have it to hand.
If there is only one terminal you must check continuity between the terminal and switch body, if there are two terminals you need to check between them both with your multimeter.
WITHOUT pressure you should indeed have continuity.

Umm have you got any oil in it (just kidding)
Never liked to rely on switches for that sort of function. A routine inspection wins hands down every time.

I thought the switch worked in the opposite way.

With the ignition on,the circuit would be made, lighting the bulb. With the engine running the pressure in the switch would stop it earthing ?

I have checked and have continuity from the terminal to the switch body with the ignition off and also with the ignition on and with the engine running.

So would it be a dodgy switch ?

YES, you`re correct and since I revisited the thread where Eisi was selling them I humbly accept I got it wrong.
So............................................
You SHOULD have continuity between the single spade terminal and the switch body.
The light will be on with the ignition but if you start the bike oil pressure `should` make it go out.
I`ve now edited my incorrect post.

So it isn't just me who having problems to get it work. I'm curious if you can find the solution because I'm out of ideas.

When you tested that the warning light was working you could see the actual bulb, i ask this as the lense cover for the warning light was blacked out on mine and i thought the bulb was not working so i removed the bulb holder from the back of the dash and it was alight,

I will try another switch from and see if i get success.

No. I will try a new switch and report back when i get some time , probably over the weekend.

I have an oil pressure light and I think it is a very good thing but it is a bit annoying when the oil gets warm and it flickers on at tickover. I mentioned it to the chap who supplied the parts and he said his did that too. It would be great if I could find a sender unit that had a higher minimum pressure than the VW one fitted then I wouldn't keep seeing this flicker in the corner of my eye

Update from Punica in the oil pressure story

Since my laptop decided that she needed a complete re-installation, I found the time to think the oil pressure thingy through once more.

By simple deduction on the TRX I came to the conclusion that the oil pressure switch isn't letting any current through (I've tested it with the ohmmeter).
First stop tomorrow after work is the car parts shop for a new oil switch...

do you have oil coming through the port the oil switch is located... if you have air / vacuum, the switch will not work.. ??

I've got mine working!

It was the faulty oil switch self, so I bought a new VW original one and then there was light.

@OFD: now it's your turn to 'see the light'
