Evening everyone, this is my first post, I am a proud new owner of a 96 trx

The problem is that the ignition switch key does not fit my seat lock, I think the location of my ignition switch has been moved due to the previous owners fitting a different front end. Does the trx have a separate key for the seat? if no then I think my ignition is not the original.

finally do I need the key to get the seats off or am I missing something.

Hi, welcome to the site, should be the same key for ignition and the seat, petrol is different key, well thats how it is on my bike anyway, mine is a 96 too, my key requires a certain waggle to make it work, so yours might need a wiggle,
Its the back of the back seat that comes off first then you pull a tiny pull thing located at the rear of the driver seat, and the driver seat will pop up,
Have a good browse on the forum there is loads on it, check out the oil checks especially as its a bit different on a dry sump motor.
Remember to put the seat down after you! (Hmm Mrs Cal seems to be rubbing off on me)

Same key for all my locks (best not lose it then!) does it fit in the lock?, any side to side movement?

Thanks for the help, it seems as though the key wont go into the seat lock far enough. I have unbolted the torx screws meantime to enable access to the cable. I will have a closer look at the lock to see whats what.

My key only goes halfway in the lock for the seat too, but thats all it needs, might be a shorter barrel on the lock body.
Have you put plenty wd40 in it? and given it the wiggle?

OEM is same key for all.
std key should go in all the way on all the locks.
if you need to, move the key laterally in the slot whilst turning it gently.
be careful what you put in the lock mechanisms.
powdered graphite is sold by locksmiths.

Looks like I need a lock set then!..........wish list!.....

My ignition key and fuel cap key are different, I don`t have a key for the non-existent seat lock though, I just pull the nipple on the end of the cable to release my seat.
Nipple pulling being one of my specialities!

Yes, same key for everything, but the seat lock (& fuel cap, from memory) only takes about half the key, mine has a little twist in the end!

Sounds like someone has replaced one of the locks on the OP's bike.

Minchead, you may get better results if you twist gently rather than pulling. Depends on the bike though, I guess.

Same key for all locks ... but I do have to apply a little downward pressure on the seat pad while turning the key, otherwise the key goes all bendy !!

Ah twisting? Yes that works too, although I sometimes get Radio One when I do that.

wow do you get SBS if you bite it

As soon as I put the key in the lock when removed from the bike it turned
I was being too gentle and not twisting hard enough, its back together now working as it should.

... but I'd still recommend putting a bit of pressure on the seat (above the catch) so the key doesn't have to work too hard
