Hi guys, ive noticed a few topics about fuel economy on here but today i had my own incident and found myself running out of fuel at 230km (around 140miles). this was a full tank of fuel, but for 17-18litres it just doesnt seem right, is it?

If my estimates are correct its only about 37mpg!

Is that right or is it drinking fuel at an excessive rate?

I have scorpion cans and K and N panel filter, with standard carbs and jets - with it being a new bike i could only describe my riding as gentle!

My std carbs with 45000 miles on them would drink a full tank in 140 miles and that was with new needles and needlejets. I swapped to FCR41's and got 178 miles on the std settings with more to come I think as its running a tad rich.

Well these carbs i have fitted do have new jet needles so thats not a problem but i question whether the mixture is too rich as i simply plugged these carbs on and let them run as they were. i might check the mixture screws next - there is certainly a smell of fuel lingering whereever the bike has run.

did you notice a big difference with thr FCR's?

I sure did it runs smoother for sure under 3000rpm in top gear and will accelerate from 2500rpm while on std carbs it was as lumpy as hell below 3000rpm and very asthmatic by comparison.

I have a 99 Aussie model. The only thing I've done to the bike is fit a pair of Staintune stainless cans. I run premium unleaded (98 octane) and usually get just over 22km per litre with a mixture of highway but mainly 'spirited' twistie / mountain riding (I have the least powerful bike in the group I ride with, the next being a VTR1000 so usually have to screw the throttle to try keep up).

Motad Venom cans, K&N filter with Dynojet stupidity in the carbs and I find it's difficult to get below 50MPG if I stay out of town. That's about 180 miles before flicking on reserve.
