Fork Oil

OK , ... so I've just changed my fork oil (483cc's of 10W Synthetic)
My measuring jug is graduated at 400 - 450 - 500 ml so I made an educated (?) guess at the 483 mark and put the same amount in each leg like a good mechanic should.
There was enough air space left for plenty more oil, so my question is ...
a) Why 483cc and not 480cc or 485cc or even 500cc ?
and
b) What would be the result of putting 500cc in each leg ?

Also, the new oil is nice and clear , but the old stuff (about 3-4 years IIRC) is a pale grey colour.
Is this normal ??

More oil or a heavier grade = greater damping, too much is not good, think of a bicyle pump filled with air, compress the handle and you can expell / move it quickly.
Fill it with oil and it takes greater force on the handle and a slower expulsion of the oil from the small bore threaded hole in the end. Air is more compressable than oil.
The grey colour? Perfectly normal, it picks up the `particles` that wear off the inner bushes and surfaces and holds them in suspension in the oil.

Thanks for that Mince , just thought 483cc was a fairly precise number, and the extra couple of cc's wouldn't make that much difference.
Now ... any tips on
a) How to clean dirty oil off my next-door-neighbour's cat
and
b) How to get the last few cc's of oil out of a bicycle pump

Roll the cat in cement then comb the clagg out. Remembering to wear some suitable gloves for the teeth and claws shite storm that will ensue.
The bicycle pump issue is easy, a strong solution of detergent and hot water, liberally sprayed at any annoying little rat kids that pass your house shouting and bawling at each other.
You may need to do this repeatedly, not to clean the pump, just to piss the little tykes off!
