Long story short (just don't make me twist the knife more in my heart...): are the ignition lock, fuel tank lock and seat lock identical?

Managed to lose the only key, bike in steering lock and finally I'm also beginning to think sensibly again after cursing and crying... So if I take the fuel tank to locksmith and he manages to make a key for it, does the key work also in ignition lock? Or are the fuel tank lock and seat lock more "simpler" verions?

I think your asking about the amount of pins the key turns in the lock! The key does go further into the ignition lock than either of the other 2 on my bike, and occasionally has to be wiggled to get it to turn. All 3 locks are the same on mine.

Me mate got same key to all locks, i have a different one to all three...don´t know if it´s a matter of model...mine -98 and his -96...

Killer, I believe that they were originally all the same, however mines a 1995!

Yes, yes, all the locks worked with the same key but now the question is: if I make a key at locksmith using for example seat lock as pattern (no key, remember, just a lock) so does the new key work also with ignition lock?

Think you have said that you snapped the key in your ignition lock! Can you take that to a lock smith who can get the broken bit out and make a key to fit?

Sorry, English is not my 1st language so bear with me... "Managed to lose the only key" = key is lost. Steering lock is on so a bit difficult to remove the upper triple tree where the ignition lock is bolted to (guess I have to drop the front tubes to be able to release steering lock?).

Anyone got a spare ignition lock and key for Heikki?

(You can snap it off!! forcibly twist the bars quickly!)

You're all correct in saying that one key fits all locks, but that's not quite what Heikki is asking

I THINK the question is ....

Is the actual lock barrel identical ... or is the ignition barrel more complex ... as in, if the locksmith can make a key based on the fuel tank lock, will the key he produces be able to work in the ignition or will it be a simple version.

Does that make sense? If so, I don't know how it can be checked ... perhaps if someone has two TRXs they could see whether the key from one will open the fuel cap on the other, if it does then the key the locksmith makes wouldn't work ... or ... scarier ... does the key from one bike start the other one?

Yes. You will want to get your key made from the ignition, as the fuel tank & seat latch don't accept the key all the way, but the ignition does.

just a thought as the topic is on the ignition lock..does anyone know if the lable on the upper lock bezel can be renewed.??..the [ON/OFF/LOCK] sticker...mine is a little on the tatty side ..sorry to get off thread.

Helped a lot, thanks! Decided to go all the way and ordered a lock set at eBay. Now thinking is it easier to deal with steering lock by drilling the ignition lock or drop front forks and that way remove upper triple tree (this way I could also save the lock and still try locksmith option). Slow Codger's "twist method" sounds a bit too rough (read: thief mode)...

If the key fits all the locks, a good locksmith should be able to make another key for you. Each lock uses a part of the key, the first part is for the seat lock, the second part is for the fuel cap and the whole key is needed for the ignition.
The only reason I know this is because Australian Motorcycle News lost there only key while they had it on test duty and they had to take the whole bike to the locksmith.
