fuel pump / tap

Had a quick search but do I remember someone here changing the fuel pump for one without a diaphragm?

If so what fits and is it an easy job?

You can go for a low pressure electric pump, or utilise one from an early R1 (carbed model). Alternatively there are other vacuum fuel pumps that fit other Yamahas like SZR660 for instance. Even the MuZ Skorpion uses the same one.
Here you go, low pressure 4 psi electric pump, reasonably priced too:

Just needs a live fused feed from the ignition and the other wire to earth and you`re cooking.

Just took the tank off the bike and the tap seems to be the likely candidate.

There was fuel in the pipe between tap and pump when I removed it but more fuel seemed to leak from tap as I manouvred the tank onto a bench. It's now sat level on a bench with a rag under it looking for a drip.

Without removing anything else, I checked the pipe from pump to inlet stub which seemed dry.

So I'm guessing fuel tap?

I had a fuel pump from a Nissan on one of my old track bikes - cost me 99p from ebay

Yep you can always go down that route but car pumps in general do tend to be somewhat bulky.

but you can put in pretty much wherever you want and hide it

Well the tank has been on the bench for a couple of hours and only a couple of drops emerged from the tap when i moved it.

A small leak but enough to foul the oil over time?

I think repair kit and emulsion tubes while I'm there and pump looks ok.

Factory pro tubes on ebay £50 or do you know of anywhere cheaper?
If I change tubes should I use new needles?

Same for tap repair kit really, is anywhere better than yamaha?

Just had a chat with Mr Yamaha at Fowlers in Bristol. Diaphragm, o ring and seal for fuel tap £11.61 inc postage.

Asked about std needles which were about £50 each......ouch!

Needless to say, just ordered the tap parts for now - a new tap worked out at £85 ish with vat etc.

Did order a set of Factory Pro emulsion tubes though from ebay.

So just wait for the bits..........

Fuel tap bits arrived from Yamaha yesterday.

No diaphragm but 3 different seals.

Checked with Yamaha these are the only parts they can order and no the diaphragm is not available, you need to buy a tap (£89).

Wemoto repair kit is out of stock with no signs of any more.

Couple of other Yamaha kits on ebay look very similar (xj600, fzr600, yzf750) but the taps look different.

Anyone here have any experience or solutions?

Track down some VITON sheet and make one.

Just been talking to a neighbour who replaced a leaky diaphragm tap with a traditional one on a Diversion he had.

Could be an option?

Yes of course, an adaptor plate could be made up to fit the bottom of the tank with an inline fuel tap utilised.
Of course you may have to forego a reserve facilty if you go down this route.
Does a Divvy tap fit the tank mounting hole spacings?

Mincehead, I'm sure my neighbour used a Yamaha on, off, reserve type that needed no modification to fit.

Many Yamaha repair kits I've looked at over the past days seem to have an identical looking gasket for the tank / tap join (an elongated oval shape with 2 cross pieces).

It may be a case of trawling through someone's stock to find one that fits and flows enough.
