engine implode?
howdy all, today I started dear trixy and she emitted a loud pop/bang,refused to run. I tried again and oil leaked out of the pipes at the muffler conection and soundedvery sick when running on one cylender I think, I quickly shut it off.
So,what do the collected minds of wisdom and experience think?
(the bike has just had the valves done)

Re: engine implode?
Was it running OK after the valves were done? Were they just checked or shimmed?
Are you sure it's oil leaking from the exhaust?
Can you describe the noise it was making?

Re: engine implode?
Ive just ridden her home from the garage yesterday
The valves were adjusted within the sevice.and they said 2 were tight.
it was oil, about 3cm round each side, and the exhausts smelt like oil.
I jst checked the oil sight glass and its way too high for a cold engine,They have overfilled it!
I have also checked for leakes around the head, airbox, exhausts with no signs of leakage.
what do you reckon?

Re: engine implode?
the running noise was like a fuel starved on one cylnder,a big pop/fart and stressed, very mechanicly noisy.
I turned it on again this arvo and it backfired and ran up to 5grand,sweet and sound fine, however Im still concerned and do not want to ride it till I have some idea.

Re: engine implode?
gidday there red, im thinking you might have the TRX fuel tap or diaphram virus thats been going around lately..any loud pop or bank is likely to be fuel, and the [oil] that you report leaking from an exhaust flange is probably excess fuel from the cylinder head mixing with the carbon ...the carbon might suppress the flavour of the stale fuel as well...also you suggest that the engine oil level has risen....if the motor sounds mechanically noisey, maybe the fuel has washed the lubricating oil from the bores as the engine struggles to clear itself..and hence a loud bang as the massive fuel charge fires in the exhaust from the one clean cylinder [ being that one will be clean as the bike was on its side stand]..and then as the engine lubes itself again, it runs sweetly up to 5 grand as youve said....these motors are pretty tough little mothers..hard to really break one mechanically...im reaconing its a fuel tap problem...good luckReddog wrote:the running noise was like a fuel starved on one cylnder,a big pop/fart and stressed, very mechanicly noisy.

Re: engine implode?
yep, this fuel tap leakage problem is getting ME worrird as well..especially that so many owners seem to be reporting it in...whether its a crossed pipe or a diaphram broken [had a problem with one of those once]
..seems to me to be the archillies heel in the TRX....my rex is used daily and has the origional tap and pump with just now 150,000 kays on the odometer...go figure..

Re: engine implode?
You'll soon know if the tap diaphram has gone as the bike will stink of fuel when standing - does the oil smell of fuel & feel a little runny? The bang definately sounds like detonation caused by fuel mixed with oil tho? This would also explain the rise in oil level.

DO NOT use the new `super fuels` many have ethanol blended in with them. A sign of the times I think, this type of thing is going to happen more frequently as governments keep upping the ratio of ethanol in pump fuels.alextrx850 wrote:yep, this fuel tap leakage problem is getting ME worrird as well..especially that so many owners seem to be reporting it in...whether its a crossed pipe or a diaphram broken [had a problem with one of those once]..seems to me to be the archillies heel in the TRX....my rex is used daily and has the origional tap and pump with just now 150,000 kays on the odometer...go figure..
Normal unleaded is fine and dandy for all but the highest of tuned TRX`s.

Re: engine implode?
doesnt really explain the oil.............
if it were THAT overfilled, maybe its not a dry sump anymore?
Could be nasty

I've put super unleaded in a couple of times recently and now I'm experiencing fuel in oil problem as detailed in other threads. Do you recken they are connected?
Andy

Re: engine implode?
Your concern on the ethanol in some pump fuel definitly has basis there Mince,..too much of it would probably [dry out] the flexability of most rubber permanently immersed..i only use the ethanol based fuel if i want to soak-up any condensed water that might be in the tank..only a couple of litres in a full tank of mineral based quality fuel and ive always been a fan of the upper valve oil additive [ havent heard of anyone here using it]..[high temp non burn oil that passes through the upper motor, lubes all it touches and carbon wont stick to anything because of it]...just a squirt every second fill...it seems to be working and for some reason, the motor dosent seem to use excessive oil if at all...ive got 70.000 ks on it now...but what seems to be important is to upgrade fuel taps and pumps as they are getting older now.Mincehead wrote:DO NOT use the new `super fuels` many have ethanol blended in with them. Ethanol based fuel is causing a lot of problems for the Ducati boys in the US - it's eating the plastic tanks!

Re: engine implode?
I thought ethanol was mixed in all fuels now at a ratio of 5% rising to 10% in the future?
I'm addicted to brake fluid, but I can stop anytime.
