I am altering the front of the TRX and am trying to get rid of/hide the master cylinder and have come across the following...

Now my question....well one of...what diameter hose would I need to suit the TRX (6mm, 8mm, or 10mm)?

Another question....is it possible to replace the master cylinder on the TRX for a length of brake hose? - I am assuming that the hose would need to carry a similar/same amount of fluid that the master cylinder normally would.

Opinions (poitive and negative), and even alternatives that I maye not have thought of would be greatly useful

Why not use a master cylinder with an integrated reservoir, like the early Fazer 600? They're pretty cheap because they're not 'cool'. The Fazer one is 14mm but there's bound to be a 5/8" from another bike that'll work.

I'd only ever consider using a length of brake hose on the rear, never the front- what happens if you need to stop quickly and there's nothing there because there's air in the system from not realising the fluid level dropped or the pads have pulled away from the disc because there's no diaphragm in the fluid reservoir?

So how are you going to force the fluid down to close the pads, and what will stop the fluid from collecting air??? Or are you putting a Norton vented drun brake to wire wheel?

The clear brake hose that can handle brake fluid, both mineral and synthetic, is known as Tygon 2075:

Amazingly tough stuff but ferkin expensive! Never the less I intend to use some on my TRX build.
Kayla`s right, go for a M/C with a reservoir built in, certainly the cheapest way to go, or indeed utilise one of the VERY cheap little billet brake reservoirs available from Korea and China?
Ebay is your place to look for these, some are even windowed too, simply search under billet brake reservoir.

By the way Dave, brake fluid is at atmospheric pressure in the tube / reservoir, it cannot absorb air as such but being hygroscopic it`ll certainly absorb moisture from any air present which affects it`s efficiency. This can then lead to a much lower boiling point.
Only when it enters the master cylinders chamber is it pressurised by lever / piston action before being forced down the lines to the caliper.

2nd edit:

Kayla, diaphragms in master cylinder reservoirs are not always essential, the piston retracting problem is not an issue on many types of modern calipers. The wee billet reservoirs seldom have diaphragms.

Oh, so you want to remotely mount the remote reservoir somewhere on the bike to hide it? The reservoir has to be above the master cylinder so that fluid flows down into the cylinder, other wise you'd need a pump to move it up, and cornering forces would act against the fluid trying to flow up. I suppose you could make a feature of the longer length of hose, and sculpt it into a shape-

I think if you want to tidy the bars up you'll have to use either an integrated m/c from another bike or one of those bloody awful billet things. If you're using flat bars I'd be tempted to use an integrated one- they look ok and they usually have a mirror mount. You could look into using an MX or supermoto m/c as well, they have quite small reservoirs and lots of people use MX rear master cylinders because the newer ones have a built in reservoir-

Ok, so am gunna get some of this Tygon stuff. Is the one hose capable of being used for brake fluid line and also as a fuel line? I have found most yellow hose is fuel line and the clear is brake fluid hose - is this correct? If I can get the one hose (preferably clear) to do both jobs, would the same diameter hose work for both applications and if so what diameter should I get for a standard TRX? If I do an ebay search, am I likely to find genuine Tygon, or are people labeling normal clear hose Tygon also (knock-off)??

So I'm looking to replace all the fluid hoses on the TRX with the Tygon stuff (& a samco kit for the radiator)...but can't seem to find anywhere to purchase it. Does anyone know of somewhere on the net?? Looking at the 2075 or 2275 (whichever is best)...

I believe the old original Yamaha black / grey fuel hose is a material called Mylar (possibly Viton in the UK) not much on Ebay but I found this:

Thanks Mince. I have purchased 10ft of the Tygon 2075 with ID of 5/16", but fro what I have seen the rear master cylinder hose is a much larger diameter. Does anyone know the ID that I need to get for the rear master cylinder?
