A try it and see scenario really, all I can envisage is that you`ll be dragging the bead of the 170 out a tad further on each side of the tyre but that doesn`t always follow as some tyres, although having a quoted profile width actually inflate to a tad over that. Obviously the manufacturers quote the rim sizes for tyres for a reason remember.
I seem to remember some members talking about tyre brands and final profile widths when fitted and inflated on a rim some time ago but cannot remember who they were or which thread it was on.

You might find this interesting, a draft ISO standard for tyres:
http://www.stevenott.com/draft5751.pdf
Whether the draft was approved or not, who knows, but it all seems to be per current tyre / rim specs to me.
I used to have a tyre to rim cross reference link by one of the major bike tyre manufacturers but for the life of me can`t find it now.

Why is the obvious question?
If you've got one kicking about, try it. If you haven't, then buy the proper size

cheers and thanks to all..picked up a builders nail..must have been for a bloody big house..just limped home before it completely went flat, felt like i was on a snow mobile, ..i just put a nice Michelin on the TRX rim before the YZF fit up..and hence the 170, be a shame to let it go hard being the cost of tyres ..cheers

Can you not have the tyre plugged?
If not, give the 170 a go - you've not really got anything to lose

I'm sure I saw a plug /tyre repair kit on e bay recently for $10... 3 for me have been plugged like that and lasted the life of the tyre no problem...
