Hi lads, I'm have to replace the headstock bearings but I'm having a hell of a time trying to get out the top bearing race, there's no notch/slot to get a bar in a tip it out!
any tips?

there is a small notch at the bottom one but I am not ashamed to say I resorted to a dremmel, cut a notch out of the inner races and then pried them out

another method is to add metal with a welder to the race thus giving you purchase for the drift.

anyone tried using a hydralic jack once the bottom one has been removed possibly using a socket the size close to the tube diameter and pressing this up to push it out... Just as an idea

but then again I spose you would have to ratchet strap the frame to stop it pulling upwards

Just what Fung said...a quick MIG weld on the bearing face both sides gives you a great purchase point ...
A pain in the arse that the Yamaha boffins didnt give a cut away like the lower race...
Not much else will work as good...
Otherwise you COULD heat the outer frame tube to expand the metal which will release the bearing race.. but you will bugger your paint, and youd have to have the frame upside down to let it fall out as you tap the outer.....
A quick MIG weld..

a little mig OR tig line
More to the point the cooling weld shrinks and takes the bearing shell with it making it easier to remove.
A hundredth of a millimetre means a lot here. After a couple of quick lines the bearing will often just fall or pop out.
Try not to get the paint hot on the frame

most D I Y places (bunnings , coastes hire etc) will hire out an arc welder, and that will do the job.

I think when I have it out I might put a cut away so if myself or anyone has to changed them again it should be easier!
