Evening all,

My TRX's speedo stopped working a while ago; I have taken the cable off and checked both ends - all seems to be good and rotates freely. I have checked the cable with a drill (at the fork end) and the speedo moves. I have searched the forum and noticed someone else mentioned a similar problem and then they had to change the speedo drive/gear. I have put the bike on paddock stands and removed the speedo end of the cable - when the wheel is turned, nothing happens with the cable so I am guessing mine is a similar problem.

I am quite happy to get my tools out and get my hands dirty but haven't dealt with an issue like this before. I was hoping someone may be able to point me in the right direction regarding parts and removal/replacements.

I had the same problem. The speedo drive was not seating properly in the hub. There are 2 notches inside the speedo drive which mate with a tabbed washer thing in the hub which seats behind the oil seal and another metal washer. In my case the tabbed washer was not mating with the speedo drive properly. Somehow it had become mishappen. I just bent it back into shaper and reassembled everything,

The drive can seize up as well, and it takes a couple of mill of the tabs which drive it, it might be worth taking it off and checking the drive unit hasnt seized up,

I presume these little bits are fairly obvious to see and tweak once the front wheel is off.

Pull the speedo drive from it`s seal (likely it`ll drop away anyway) then look into the recess in the wheel, you`ll see two tangs at right angles to the wheels machined face.
It is these two tangs that locate in the speedo drive boss and turn the pinion which engages with the worm, this inturn rotates and the speedo cable end locates in the square in the worm transferring the drive to the cable.
If the tangs are bent down or indeed sheared off the ring that carries them will need to be replaced, you CAN try bending them back but care must be taken or they`ll snap off along the stress point.

Gents, I eventualy got a round to this today and the tabs had already snapped off. Having looked at the parts manual, I have ordered a replacement part (clutch meter) and thought I may as well do the other bits whilst I am in there (retainer, clutch and oil seal). Are these pretty straightforward? ie pull the old ones out, grease the new one and persuade them to fit in?

Simple stuff, lever out the old oil seal and the retaining ring and the drive ring (the bit that should have the tabs), simply pulls out.
You reverse the procedure to re-fit, albeit with grease and be careful with the new oil / grease seal. A socket or piece of deburred tube of a similar diameter can be used to drive it home.
If you have niether then use the wooden handle of a hammer or similar and knock the seal squarely into it`s recess in the wheel hub.
I have NO IDEA why Yamahahahaha refer to the components as a clutch meter and retainer clutch, but then they refer to the speedometer drive as a gear unit assembly!
You can utilise the forum`s downloads section for service and parts guides that are hiding there.

Thanks Mincehead, I shall have a look at the downloads. I was a bit confused about the naming of these bits too, luckily the part nummber steered me in the right direction. Parts should be here Monday - fingers crossed.

The final part arrived today - all done and speedo working again - thanks for the advice.

I had the same problem with my new TRX where the speedo stopped working but the cable seemed ok. Thanks to the advice found here I bought a new clutch meter for $7 and Bob's yer uncle! all fixed.
