Well at 60K km I had two simultaeous failures..
1. One if the ignition colis developed an intermitent fault causing cronic misfiringing and hunting at low revs... living on a steep hill this was no fun going home from work in the tourist season.
2. a front wheel bearing collapsed (causing intermitent rattling at the front)..

Does anyone know if either of these componts have a set service interval or of the use of Bluespot/Goldspot calipers would have contributed to the bearing failure.. I can't see why as they were used in the Fazer 600 (same wheel, similar weight of bike).

I can't comment on the longevity of ignition coils. Are you sure that it's the coil anyway? There are a few other parts in the ignition system that may contribute to the issue.

As for wheel bearings, after 15 years and 83,000 km my TRX is on its 4th set of front wheel bearings. The last set gave some really frightening symptoms as they (well, only the left one really) deteriorated. I suspect that it would benefit from a larger diameter axle and correspondingly sized bearings, but it isn't excessively difficult replacing the standard ones.

So yes I would say that they are a normal wear item but I doubt that you could specify a replacement interval. Just fix them when they're obviously worn.

Thanks Bazzee - Test running the new coil at the moment and it seems to have fixed the issue - trouble is I need a good long hard run (maybe 70 or 80 km) to get rid of all the accumulated muck in the exhast system to be absolutely... that's a run up the motorway in 4th planned for this weekend - weather permitting.
Thanks for the heads up on the wheel-bearings though - I'll be checking them every year from now on... out of interest, have you had to change your steering head bearings at all yet and if so did you use OEM Bearings or an alternative?

Mate you need heat to clean the exhaust, load the engine up, dont just run it at a higher RPM, like on the motorway in 4th.
You may as well sit it in the shed on a high idle.

Wait for a warm day,find some long hills, put someone fat on the back, gently ride the brakes and make it work for as long as possible.
A dyno run works very well too, as the cans dont get much cooling from the passing airstream.

so what are you saying the FAT thighs on the back hide the breeze to heat the cans
The only problem being then you'll burn out another set of wheel bearings

Hills I have plenty of - I'll skip the fat Pillion though.. I think I weigh enough on my own to not need that .
.. just to comöete the story though.. ther wheel bearing collapse fried the speedo drive gear.. my Acewell stopped working on the first run so I stopped to check that the "pseudo Speedo cable" had been screwed back in properly and burnt my fingers on the fork leg bottom.. that is now fixed as well.. never rains but it pours all right.
