Noisy cam chain

Hi, picked up the other TRX pn Sunday, man was it dirty!

Anyway, cleaned it down, but as was advertised, the cam chain is making a racket.

At idle, it's in noticeable. but when you rev it, as the revs drop you can hear a clatter from the chain, notably at the back of the head. It'll also make the most noise when you hold it arouns 3000rpm. I daren't rev it any higher as it is.

It's got a new tensioner in it (fitted by the previous owner). I removed this tonight and tired it the other way round. I even took the copper washer out in an effort to get it to pop out another click on the ratchet but it's still noisy.

I've only ridden it down the road and it's pretty awful noise wise, and I'm paranoid about it jumping or causing some damage.

Any tips for something I can try? of is it a new chain or engine rebuild?

I can't even remember what my other one sounded like, the echusts were too loud to tell!

Guys my cam chain rattles like a bitch, my bike has 106,000 Kms on the clock. Under 4000 on the Tach it rattles like crazy, above that no noise. What I would like to know is, I have de-registered my bike for the ultimate rebuild, no expence spared. Does anyone know someone who manufactures ultra strong TRX cam chains? above stock? I am an abuser of cam chains. I would like to buy a cam chain that can handle the power that i am expecting of my rebuild. No expence, I dont care if it costs A$2000.

Standard cam chain is more than up to the job but if you must have an aftermarket one, I understand that only Tsubaki offer one (at least in the UK)

True, but better than wrecking the engine

My chain also rattles, but only between 2500 and 3000 rpm. It's off for its 12000 mile service soon (getting a fair bit done), so am getting the mechanic to look at the tensioner. It runs absolutely fine, so I don't reckon there's anything to worry about...(hopefully!) [-o<

Got a haynes manual at last. Looks like the chain is servicable without dropping the engine out of the frame.

I'll strip it out this week and see what the problem is, hopefully it is limited to he timing gear and isn't something more serious.

Make sure you 'reset' the tensioner when you put it back together (as described in the manual).

yup, I've already worked out how that works anyway.

HAd eperience of VW VR6 enignes for many years, which run cam chains, so I'm used to how they work and what does what.

Also, just found out that my mate has a mtae who happens to be the parts manager for his local Yam dealer :-)
