oil filter

at the risk of appearing a bit thick i need some help please, my trx has been stripped for a while now for a winter rebuild and i have forgotten which way up the oil filter goes, does it go with the closed end up or the open end up. i cannot help but wonder about the oil filter i have bought, it is open ay one end but closed at the other, it also has not got a boss to locate it in either the top or the bottom, can anyone tell me if this is the right one, i bought it at an auto jumble so i may have been sold the wrong one. thanks

Radman, an old filter would be handy to compare, otherwise the filter fits with the outlet hole to the bottom....thinking to it..the oil enters the filter chamber from the upper oil tank, then filters through the filter and then down to be used by the motor..so the hole needs to be at the bottom..
Make sure the rubber seals are there ..if you still have the box of the jumble sale filter, compare the part numbers.
The filter chamber lid should have a small amount of resistance in closing too,..1mm or so to compress the rubber seals on the filter..
The filter should have a rubber ring on the closed end to seat the filter and vibration, while the open end has the boss as you say,.. and also a rubber seal to again seal and seat the filter.

regarding that seal in oilfilter. We made service to my friends 750SuperTenere which he just had bought (150tkm driven and some of that also in Sahara) and I looked inside oilfilter housing and there were TWO seals stacked in top of housing. So make sure you get that seal away with filter.

thanks for your help guys, as you say alex an old filter would be an advantage but i am a tidyness freak in the garage and rubbish is thrown out straight away, just the same with the oil filter box, i must learn my lesson this time, thanks again guys
