Blue spot calipers- what next?

Hi All,

Just got a pair second hand from the states. I'm not sure what to do next.

I want to check if they're OK but, do I buy new pads (old ones are shagged) then fit the calipers to the bike and see if they work OK (I've still got the standard master cylinder) and then eventually get a new master cyl' if I need to (& replace the faded blue inserts on one of them), or is there another way I can check? As the pistons are completely compressed inside the housings (I assume to push the fluid out of them), I can't even see what condition they're in.

There are also no dust covers over the the pad pins. Is there supposed to be (I'm not real farmiliar with these things and I dont see many around here)?

One last question if I may:
I'm sure a while back, there was a link to a US company that sells cheap OEM parts but after searching last night and this morning I can't find it for the life of me. Does anyone know who it was?

Regards

Paul O

G'day Paul , no they don't have covers. Buy some brake cleaner and give them a good clean then fit new pads ,install on bike and enjoy. They will be an improvement over the sumitomo's or Brembo's for sure even with rubber lines and standard master cylinder installed. Upgrade later at your leisure.

Apparently the blue have steel pistons & the good have alloy or so I've heard. Apparently went to alloy to reduce oscilation from the extra weight during head shakes on r1s. Again, so I've heard. I like the look of the blue better. Was going to go gold but am changing from the bike being black/gold to black/blue.

As long as "when you go for gold son" you don't end up black and blue   That's the main thing

On the inserts front;
A tool that fits the insert precisely is required to remove the insert.
I have seen specialist one offs of this tool in UK but unsure of availability in your location.
Very substantial torque is required to undo initially but once seal is broken it is relatively easy to remove and replace insert.
A new O ring (special = not available from Yamaha IIRC) is required to reseal insert.
Replacement inserts are not available=you would have to re-anodise the existing.
The silver (un-anodised) and gold anodised inserts do indeed denote alloy piston equipped calipers that were std on Yamaha's considered flagship models of the era (Later V-Max/some TDM's but not R1's AFAIK.Weight loss was not a consideration; but rather an attempt to reduce corrosion/siezure of the cylinder itself within the alloy caliper.
Try the std master cyl.If you like the feel/response=no need to upgrade.
The problem most encounter is;they cannot bleed replacement calipers sufficiently and presume the master cylinder to be at fault and hence replace the master. They then are still unable to bleed the system and condem the blue spots as a poor upgrade.
Removing the caliper and inverting helps with bleeding unco-operative calipers as does pressurising the system overnight before rebleed.
Reverse bleeding is easier although can be messy.
The stainless steel plate locked by the pad pins is referred to as "Anti-rattle plate" and is directional (Arrow to front) and is a OEM replaceable part if mislaid.
The perforated plates clipped to the back of the pads are referred to as "Anti-squeel shims" and only are supplied with a OEM pad set (not separate)
Hope this was of some little help.
A link is included re;seal tool and seals See 1/4 way down page.

A rear caliper insert is removed by unscrewing INTO the caliper not out.

Here is a link to the tool in USA;

G'day mate, the site you want is Partshark.com

On the calipers, if the pistons are pushed all the way in & seals look good, it's probably a good sign that all is well.

You could always replace the seals as a precaution, new pads definitely. You might find the stock M/C a bit wooden, I certainly did. The '02 R1 Radial M/C is a bolt on upgrade, about $150 from partshark brand new. It's a Brembo M/C also.

No dustcovers on the calipers is standard.

You don't listen much, I bang on about them all the time! :P Different pistons, (same part number as the radially mounted R1 Goldposts, coincidentally. ;)), I assume lighter &/or coated piston for longevity.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I've given them a good clean with brake cleaner & also truck was (after plugging the fluid holes) & got some new pads, so when I get the chance I'll fit them up & see how they go. Didn't get new seals yet but will if need be. I figure I fit em up etc, then I can see how the pistons are & take it from there. I'll also add partshark to favourites

Gold spots (non radial), are a bit lighter, more rigid and YES different pistons giving a little more efficiency.

Total black for me.

It's not the case unfortunately as you can see from my updated information.
You'll have to send me a video to teach the secret handshake.

BTW you may notice in the upper part of the picture that the headlight was replaced with another unit.
It's an FZR1000exup '91 part: while it's not what I would dream about in terms of light output it's a marked improvement that doesn't require any modification except the connector of the headlight itself.
