fuel tap suprise

Hello everyone,

i had to remove the tank today and to my suprise with the fuel tap in the reserve position i got showered in petrol!
I presume that the fuel should stay put when you detatch the hoses, have had a look for previous leads on this and assume i need to buy a petrol tap repair kit from e-bay?

I have just changed the oil and filter and didn't notice petrol in the old oil, i have removed the tank and left it off until i get some advice!

The petrol was eally gushing out with the tap on reserve am i missing something............sorry for silly question and thanks in advance.

Yep, sounds like a repair kit is needed!

Mine would gush more when on prime but it was still a lot coming through on reserve or on. Happily it's quite an easy job, worst part is emptying the tank enough to be able to take the tap apart in the first place. I ended up with a collection of jars..

Many thanks for the reply..............i have decided to buy a second hand tap off e-bay. Just hoping that the bike's fuel pump works.

If your tap is pouring fuel, the problem is probably not with the diaphram, but with the plunger damaged.
So, the tap repair kit will not solve your problem.
By the way did you find any visible problem inside the tap after you disassembled it?
Let us know how you proceed with the fix!

Do anyone know if the tap is leaking fuel, can fuel also pass the fuel pump and pour into the carb?
I know that the pump is also vacuum operated, would like to know if a leaking tap is really big problem.

I found that the smiley seal behind the on/prime/reserve, errr, "control" had gone so hard it came out in solid pieces and the O-ring on the end of what is perhaps the plunger (the metal moving part that goes in the back of the tap) also seems very hard. The diaphragm seems a little distressed by ethanol but I can't find any holes in it. The new spring that went in also seemed a little stronger than the original.

I'm not sure if fuel did ever make it into my oil (I can't smell it) but I can say that the bike now starts easier after being left a while, so something is better. Presumably the float level now stays about right!

Hello Laszlo,

well the E-bay fuel tap turned up and looks okay, i bought a new rubber gasket to help seal it. So far so good, seems to be working okay.

Just fitted new chain and sprocket set and now waiting for some decent weather!
