Pilot Screws

Post by rogerc41 » Tue Apr 16, 2013 6:07 pm

Afternoon all,

Well after a little bit if progress with the project over that last few weeks it was the carbs turn for some much needed attention. After getting most things removed from the left carb and an almost empty carb body left, it just left the pilot screws to remove. Upto that point everything had come out without a hitch, nothing siezed or broken. Until these damn pilot screws. It just wouldn't move, either way, on the left carb. The one on the right would turn about and a quater turn. Ive tried everything to get them moving, heat, penetrating fluid, the lot. The end result was that the heads gave way and now there is nowt to get purchase on

Has anyone else had the same issues??

I'm not too sure which way to go now.
Leave them in, have no adjustment and hope they are in the right setting once the carbs have been refurbed.
Get another set of carbs and risk having the same problem.
Try to use a small drill to make a series of small holes to use as a lot for a screwdriver.
Or drill down the centre to open the whole and release the bulk of the screw, then pick up the thread with a tap to remove the brass remains.

Any advice welcome.

I use an EZ-Out Screw extractor for pilot jets with stripped slots. First drill a small hole with the recommended drill size and do not drill too deeply. Then use the easy out tool, turning counter-clockwise. (You need to buy new pilot jets for replacement.)

Thanks for that Peter.

I did think of an EZ out the other day but think i dismissed it as i thought that the hardness of the item would just cut through the brass of the screw and completely churn it to nothing, but very glad to know that this is possible.

At present the carbs are almost back together as i want to make progress when whilst i can. I have new carb gaskets, o-rings and emeulsion tubes on the way and it the only thing holding back from running. Think i'm going to leave them as they are at present but if i have problems further down the line i will have to come back to them. I'm encouraged that the carbs were pretty well set up anyway. When the the old plugs came out there colour was spot on and looking at the piston crown down the plug holes, they look good too. I will have a small amount of mixture adjustment with the height of the needles if need be too.

Many thanks again
